Answering Legal Alternatives 2026: Eight Priced Services
Published . Updated . Prices checked October 12, 2026.

Key takeaways
- Answering Legal does not publish a plan price. Of eight priced alternatives, Go Answer costs $345 for 100 three-minute calls (checked October 12, 2026).
- LEX Reception and Alert Communications publish legal intake plans; their billed time and extra work differ.
- Answering Legal says it tracks by the second, but its terms do not state the billing increment. Ask for the agreement before comparing a quote.
- For longer intake calls, Smith.ai charges per call, subject to its extended-intake rules and add-ons.
Answering Legal does not publish plan prices as of October 12, 2026. Among eight alternatives with published prices in the table, 100 three-minute calls cost from $345 at Go Answer to $1,160 at Ruby, before fees and add-ons. A quote from Answering Legal is needed for a price comparison.
What does Answering Legal publish about its price?
Answering Legal sells minutes packages but directs buyers through a pricing form. Its pricing page shows no public plan amount or overage rate. For 50, 100 and 200 calls of three minutes each, the index therefore reports quote only, quote only and quote only. Read the Answering Legal pricing guide for the trial, fees and contract language before requesting a quote.
The service has a real reason to remain in consideration. Its help center says every plan includes custom legal intake, bilingual receptionists, appointment scheduling, call transfers and CRM integrations (billing help, read October 7, 2026). Its new-client intake page lists case details, opposing parties, court dates and urgency indicators. That is more specific than message taking. The price of handling those minutes remains undisclosed.

Our arithmetic: each priced vendor's least costly published plan for that volume plus published overage, at 3-minute calls. Taxes, setup fees, pass-through fees and add-ons are excluded. How we price.
Of these eight priced alternatives, MAP Communications costs least at 50 three-minute calls, while Go Answer costs least at 100 and 200. This is a price result for the table, not a claim about intake quality. Answering Legal has no public amount to put above or below it. At 100 calls, LEX Reception costs $450 and PATLive $479. At 200 calls, PATLive costs $938 and LEX Reception $1,000. The order changes with volume; do not extrapolate a single winner.
Which alternatives handle legal intake?
LEX Reception
LEX Reception sells legal answering with matter-specific intake. Its personal injury page describes screening for jurisdiction, case type and injury details (read October 7, 2026). Its direct pricing page publishes $450 for 100 three-minute calls. LEX rounds each interaction up to a whole minute; its FAQ gives an example of a call lasting 2 minutes 28 seconds billed as 3 minutes (read October 7, 2026). It includes the first 30 interactions under 30 seconds without charge per billing cycle (direct plans, read October 9, 2026). Ask how your longest intake scripts change the minute total.
Alert Communications
Alert publishes legal intake tiers and a pay-as-you-go plan. It describes conflict screening and routing in its legal intake service (read October 7, 2026). Our table uses the least costly computable plan at each volume; Alert's bundled tiers have no published overage rate, so the table's costs come from Alert Go. Its terms count hold, outbound ringing, post-call notes and system time. The same terms permit an AI agent to handle calls unless the client opts out in writing. Firms requiring a human on every call should settle that point in the plan.
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists
Smith.ai offers legal intake, conflict checks and case-management links on its law firm service page (read October 7, 2026). Billing is per call: the indexed cost is $915 at 100 calls. That avoids an open-ended per-minute bill for a longer call, but reasonable-use terms say extended intake questions must average no more than 120 seconds and additional work can draw fees (read October 7, 2026). Price your actual script and add-ons, not the table alone. Smith.ai does not count certain spam and misdialed calls if forwarded lines pass caller ID (pricing FAQ, read October 5, 2026).
Go Answer
Go Answer advertises legal intake specialists on its law firm service page (read October 7, 2026). It costs $345 for 100 three-minute calls in the index, the least of these eight at that volume. Its FAQ says summary and disconnection work uses minutes, while hold and ring time do not (read October 7, 2026). Its terms say phone numbers transferred into Go Answer remain its property. Keep an existing firm number at your own carrier and forward it if portability matters.
PATLive
PATLive publishes a minute-plan ladder and offers call handling plus lead capture. At 50 three-minute calls it costs $293.50, with a first-minute minimum and subsequent 6-second increments under its terms (read October 7, 2026). The terms exclude queue time and time after the receptionist disconnects, a useful distinction for callers waiting to be answered. PATLive is a general-business service, so confirm the intake fields and escalation rules your firm needs. Its pricing page is covered separately.
MAP Communications
MAP Communications has a law-firm service that describes new-client intake and consultation scheduling (read October 7, 2026). It costs $211.50 at 50 three-minute calls, the lowest priced row at that volume. Its terms count after-call documentation in billable time and add a per-call telecom fee plus other fees whose amounts are not published (read October 7, 2026). The table excludes those fees. Ask for a sample invoice before comparing MAP with an inclusive quote.
Posh
Posh sells live reception with a published pay-as-you-go entry and minute packages. Its pricing page lists a trial, which can be useful for testing a firm's forwarding and script (read October 5, 2026). At 100 three-minute calls its indexed cost is $630. Its terms round calls to whole minutes and count post-call work (read October 7, 2026). The page does not document a free-spam-call policy. Ask whether wrong numbers and very short answered calls use the allowance.
Ruby
Ruby publishes receptionist-minute plans and offers legal answering among its industries. The pricing page includes appointment scheduling and integrations on its live plans (read October 5, 2026). At 100 three-minute calls the indexed cost is $1,160. Ruby's terms bill hold and post-call work and round each call to a full minute (read October 7, 2026). Its optional robocall filter keeps filtered calls off the bill, but a solicitor who reaches a receptionist is a separate case. Ask to activate the filter before forwarding your main line.
What does Answering Legal do that a switch might lose?
Answering Legal's receptionists focus on law firms. Its intake help specifies case details and urgency indicators; its integration help names Clio Grow, PracticePanther, Lawmatics, Smokeball, MyCase and Lead Docket (both read October 7, 2026). The bilingual help says Spanish handling is in the standard plan. A firm using those paths needs to test the replacement's actual handoff, not just compare table cells.
The contract also creates questions worth resolving before a switch. Answering Legal's terms say service continues until the next billing cycle after written cancellation notice, and overages remain payable. They say numbers assigned by Answering Legal remain its property. Port a number you control while the old service still answers, then move call forwarding, test new and existing client routes, and send cancellation notice in writing. Ask Answering Legal which number belongs to your firm before beginning a port.
What should you ask when comparing the quotes?
The Answering Legal comparison page says, "We track usage by the second" (read October 7, 2026). Its service terms do not state a billing increment. LEX states whole-minute rounding in its terms (read October 7, 2026). This difference can matter for many short calls, but a quote needs the actual billing rule, included minutes and overage rate in writing. Do not infer that second-by-second tracking means a particular rounding rule on the invoice.
Ask each provider for the same items: a written plan covering 50, 100 and 200 calls at your observed average call length; what counts before and after live conversation; spam and wrong-number treatment; setup and pass-through fees; the exact cancellation date; and whether a number you bring remains yours. If intake is the reason to switch, give each vendor the same sample script and ask where the answers land in your case-management system. The law-firm intake guide covers that handoff.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Answering Legal cost compared with its alternatives?
Answering Legal does not publish a monthly plan amount or overage rate. At 100 three-minute calls, these eight alternatives run from $345 at Go Answer to $1,160 at Ruby, before fees and add-ons. Request Answering Legal's written quote for the same call pattern.
Is LEX Reception an Answering Legal alternative?
Yes. LEX Reception publishes its plans and legal-intake scope. At 100 three-minute calls its indexed cost is $450. Unlike Answering Legal's second-tracking claim, LEX's terms specify whole-minute rounding per interaction. Compare the actual quote and intake script.
Which option bills by the call instead of the minute?
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists bills by the call. At 100 calls its indexed cost is $915, before extended-intake add-ons. Its reasonable-use terms limit the length of extended intake questions, so a long legal screening script needs a separate quote.
Can I keep my law firm's number when leaving Answering Legal?
Check whether the number was assigned by Answering Legal or is held at your own carrier. Answering Legal's terms say its assigned numbers remain its property (terms of service, read October 7, 2026). Keep your carrier-held number under your control and test forwarding to the new service before cancelling.
Does Answering Legal offer a free trial?
Its pages describe the trial in different ways. The trial tutorial describes 14 days or 400 minutes; help describes seven days; the terms allow ending it after more than 100 minutes (all read October 7, 2026). Ask which written terms apply to your account.
How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Clarified Alert Communications and Nexa trial summaries from "None" to "None found": the reviewed public pages do not offer trial terms, but do not establish that no private offer exists.
- Clarified LEX Reception trial wording from "None" to "None found": the reviewed vendor pages publish no trial offer, but do not establish that the company never offers one.
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
