Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan or prepaid purchase for the named call volume, using 3-minute calls and published overage. The table excludes taxes, setup, dispatch add-ons, after-hours fees and transfer charges. AnswerAmerica is prepaid message taking with no transfers; unused credits roll over. How we price.
The table prices live receptionists. It includes message-only plans to show the full published range, but those plans cannot patch an urgent caller to a plumber. AnswerAmerica is prepaid rather than a recurring monthly plan. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress takes messages but does not transfer calls. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus has transfers, with separate transfer and after-hours charges under its terms. Nexa asks for a quote, so a comparable monthly total cannot be calculated from a public rate. The table leaves out software phone platforms and AI-only products; see the AI answering service guide for that choice.
How a plumbing emergency call changes the bill
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says plumbers are often on call for emergencies, making nights and weekends common work times (Occupational Outlook Handbook, updated August 2026). That makes the dispatch path part of the service you are buying. A call handled at night can involve screening, a hold while the agent tries the first technician, an unanswered dial-out, a backup contact and a message. Ask each vendor which of those stages is billed and what happens when nobody picks up.
At 100 three-minute calls, PATLive costs $479 and Ruby costs $1,160. PATLive is cheaper at that volume, but its published calculation cannot predict a plumber's real bill when hold time or call length changes. PATLive bills hold time while attempting a transfer. Ruby bills hold and after-call work and rounds each call up to a whole minute. See the per-minute versus per-call calculator to use your own billed call length.
Per-call prices solve a different problem. At 100 calls, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs $260 before its transfer and night charges, versus PATLive's $479 before excluded fees. ReceptionHQ's fixed call count can be useful when a conversation runs long, but its terms can move excessive calls to a per-minute plan. Smith.ai's live per-call plan has a reasonable-use condition for extended intake. A dispatcher who asks for the address, problem, access instructions and safety details should test the script against those limits before signing.
What happens if the on-call plumber does not answer?
Write a dispatch rule, then ask the service to demonstrate it. The receptionist needs the service area, the threshold for waking a technician, the primary and backup numbers, how long to try each, and the point at which to send a message instead. Require the same script for a burst pipe, a routine appointment and a call outside your coverage area. None of the published plan prices proves that the vendor will reach your technician.
Moneypenny counts every dispatch attempt. Its phone terms say "the entire time that our agents are attempting to dispatch a call or calls to you or your employees is considered billable time" (Moneypenny US phone terms, read October 7, 2026). If the first plumber does not pick up, the next attempt keeps the meter running. At 100 three-minute calls the base calculation is $613; it does not include extra dispatch time. Its terms add wrap-up before rounding each call to a half-minute increment.
PATLive bills the transfer attempt while its receptionist is on the line. Its terms state that hold time while the agent attempts a transfer "will be included in the billable minute" and that time after the receptionist disconnects is not billed (PATLive terms, read October 7, 2026). Ask whether the receptionist tries a backup number, leaves a message or returns to the caller when the first transfer fails. PATLive's plumbing page advertises emergency routing and scheduling, but the written call flow still decides the outcome (PATLive plumbing service, read October 9, 2026).
Specialty Answering Service counts actions differently across plans. Its help article says each inbound or outbound call, including a warm transfer or reach on-call attempt, uses one call count on its per-call plans (SAS help center, read October 7, 2026). Those plans qualify only when calls last two minutes or less, according to its rate page (read October 9, 2026). The table therefore prices its per-minute plans at our three-minute assumption. For the per-minute plans, the same rate page names hold, patch and after-call time as billable. Ask for a sample invoice with the full on-call sequence.
ReceptionHQ separates the answer from the roster. Its terms charge for a ReceptionistPlus transfer and for an unsuccessful transfer attempt. A maintained on-call roster is also a paid add-on, separate from the table's call plan (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026). Its home-services page says receptionists can follow preferred emergency scripts and quote a service-call fee (read October 7, 2026). Ask whether the roster updates automatically when your shift changes and whether a failed patch triggers the backup contact.
Who answers Spanish plumbing calls at night?
An English line described as round-the-clock does not establish Spanish coverage at the same hours. PATLive lists English support around the clock and Spanish support from 8 am to 10 pm Eastern (PATLive bilingual help, read October 7, 2026). ReceptionHQ says its live Spanish staff work from 5 am to 7 pm Mountain Standard Time and that overnight live backup is English-speaking (ReceptionHQ FAQ, read October 7, 2026). MAP Communications describes bilingual live agents on nights, weekends and holidays (MAP bilingual service, read October 7, 2026), but its terms impose a holiday fee without publishing the amount (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026).
Test the language path with the same emergency script. Ask what a Spanish caller hears after the published support window, whether translation or transfer is involved, and whether a Spanish-speaking technician is on the roster. The bilingual answering service comparison details the hours and surcharges. A daytime bilingual badge does not answer the night-dispatch question.
Which scheduling integrations are documented?
A software logo is weaker evidence than a documented workflow. Ask the vendor to show a test call that creates a job or contact in your actual system, then confirm whether the record can be edited after dispatch. The public pages below establish different levels of connection.
| Service | Plumbing tool | What the vendor actually documents | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| PATLive | Jobber | A help article describes connecting Jobber to PATLive | PATLive Jobber help, read October 7, 2026 |
| Smith.ai | ServiceTitan | Calls handled by its receptionists appear in ServiceTitan | Smith.ai ServiceTitan page, read October 7, 2026 |
| Smith.ai | Jobber | The connection instructions use Zapier | Smith.ai Jobber page, read October 7, 2026 |
| ReceptionHQ | ServiceTitan, Jobber, Housecall Pro | Logos appear under a booking claim; the page does not explain the connection method | ReceptionHQ home services, read October 7, 2026 |
| Moneypenny | ServiceTitan, Jobber, Housecall Pro | Integration logos appear, with no field mapping or connection method on that page | Moneypenny home services, read October 7, 2026 |
PATLive also lists ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro and Jobber on its plumbing page, read October 9, 2026. For the two tools without a linked setup article in this comparison, confirm whether the connection is native, uses Zapier or requires manual entry. Do not buy the answering plan on the strength of a logo alone.
Which answering service fits each plumbing workflow?
Message capture without transfers: AnswerAmerica or ReceptionHQ MessageExpress
At 100 three-minute calls, AnswerAmerica is the lowest priced purchase among the published plans in this table at $150; ReceptionHQ MessageExpress costs $170 before its after-hours surcharge. Both are message-taking choices. AnswerAmerica requires prepaid credits that roll over, and neither row provides live transfer to an on-call plumber. Use a separate escalation path if emergency dispatch is part of your promise.
Live dispatch on a published plan: Go Answer
At 100 three-minute calls, Go Answer costs $345, the lowest among the per-minute services with published prices in this table. Its plumbing page says appointment scheduling and emergency dispatch are included (read October 7, 2026). The catch is that its FAQ bills summary and disconnection time after the caller hangs up, and its terms allow limiting calls above anticipated volume (Go Answer FAQ and terms, read October 7, 2026). Have it demonstrate the backup step in your script.
A per-call transfer plan: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
At 100 three-minute calls, ReceptionistPlus costs $260 before transfer, after-hours and roster charges. This suits a plumber who can make intake brief and keep the on-call list current. It can transfer calls, unlike MessageExpress. Its terms allow added charges for longer calls and a move to per-minute billing when call durations are excessive (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026). Get a sample bill for a weekend emergency, including a failed first transfer.
No separate overnight call surcharge: PATLive
PATLive's FAQ says it has no extra overnight, weekend or holiday answering charge (read October 7, 2026). At 100 three-minute calls, its computed base is $479. It offers emergency dispatch and scheduling, but hold during a transfer attempt uses receptionist minutes and Spanish has a shorter stated window. It may suit an English-language on-call queue whose technicians can be reached promptly. Confirm the procedure when no one answers.
Questions to settle before forwarding your number
- Send the vendor your emergency definition, coverage map, current on-call schedule and backup order. Have it read the sequence back and test each failed-transfer branch.
- Ask who may quote the diagnostic or service-call fee and whether the script requires a technician to approve that quote.
- Request an invoice example with an inbound call, two technician attempts, a text message and after-call notes. Identify each billable action or minute.
- Verify the overnight Spanish path, any holiday surcharge and the location of the team answering at night.
- Test the job record in your field-service software. A logo does not show which fields transfer or whether a dispatcher must re-enter the address.
- Keep ownership of the advertised number clear. Ask about porting and notice before moving your primary plumbing line.
For general contract, spam and rounding questions, use the answering service questions checklist and the after-hours guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a plumbing answering service dispatch an emergency at night?
Yes, several live services publish emergency routing or transfer features, but each plumber must supply an urgency rule and on-call sequence. PATLive's plumbing page names emergency routing, Moneypenny describes a custom escalation process, and ReceptionHQ says it follows a preferred script. Ask each to demonstrate a missed first attempt before relying on it.
Is a per-call plan safer for long plumbing emergency calls?
A per-call plan can keep the base call charge stable when the conversation runs long, but the published terms can limit that benefit. ReceptionHQ may require a Plus Pack or a move to per-minute billing for long calls. Smith.ai's live plan limits extended intake under its reasonable-use policy. Test your script with the vendor and read the transfer charges.
Does a night call cost more than a daytime call?
It depends on the vendor. PATLive says its overnight answering has no separate surcharge. ReceptionHQ's terms impose an after-hours charge on its per-call plans outside its weekday Phoenix-time window, including weekends and federal holidays. The comparison table excludes that charge, so ask for a night-call invoice example.
Will a Spanish-speaking receptionist answer an emergency overnight?
Do not assume that from a bilingual label. PATLive and ReceptionHQ publish Spanish support windows shorter than their English coverage. MAP Communications describes bilingual staff at night. Ask the vendor to test your Spanish emergency script at the exact hours you need.
Can the receptionist book a plumbing job in ServiceTitan or Jobber?
Some vendors document a connection, while others show the software logo without explaining it. Smith.ai describes its ServiceTitan sync and a Jobber connection through Zapier; PATLive has a Jobber help article. Ask for a test job with address, urgency, access notes and assigned technician in your own account.
How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Clarified LEX Reception trial wording from "None" to "None found": the reviewed vendor pages publish no trial offer, but do not establish that the company never offers one.
- Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
