Key takeaways

  • At 100 three-minute calls, live answering services cost $150 to $1,160, median $406 (prices checked October 12, 2026). AnswerAmerica requires upfront credit purchases, not a monthly plan.
  • Rounding changes the minute you pay for: 8 of 15 live and hybrid services that publish an increment bill whole minutes, rounded up.
  • Low volume favors a small base fee: PATLive costs less than Go Answer until about 28 calls a month, and Go Answer costs less from there.
  • PATLive's own help center tells customers to pick a package by its break-even points, and its two articles on them give different numbers.
  • Every break-even here compares monthly plans using each vendor's cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls.

As of October 12, 2026, 100 three-minute calls cost $150 to $1,160 (low end AnswerAmerica, prepaid message-taking only, no transfers; unused credits roll over) across live answering services, median $406. Monthly "flat rate" plans buy an allowance with overage. AnswerAmerica sells prepaid call credits that roll over.

Our arithmetic: monthly services use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows upfront cash needed to buy enough credits; unused credits roll over. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

The 25-call column shows where some pay-as-you-go plans and minute bundles trade places. Answering Legal and Nexa require a quote. AnswerConnect and LEX Reception publish plan prices. AnswerConnect and AnswerForce are one company, AnywhereWorks, Inc. (who owns which answering service). Alert Communications serves law firms alone. The full market view is in answering service pricing.

Answering service cost calculator: your calls, your minutes

Every number in the table assumes 3-minute calls. Put in your own call count and average billed minutes per call. The calculator labels AnswerAmerica's prepaid purchase as upfront cash, separately from monthly charges. The same tool runs on its own page as the answering service cost calculator.

Billed minutes divided by calls, from your last three invoices. Rounding, time billed after the call, spam, taxes, fees and setup are not included.

How to find your two numbers

Take your last three invoices. Add the billed minutes and divide by the number of calls: that is your billed minutes per call, rounding and after-call time included. Use the average of the three months as your call count, not the busiest month.

Vendors' own figures for a typical call differ. PATLive's help center says "Most calls fall within the 3 to 3.5-minute range, and we bill accordingly" (help.patlive.com, read October 7, 2026), while its pricing page puts its 50-minute plan at "About 20 calls", or 2.5 minutes a call (our arithmetic). Ruby says "a typical inbound call results in around 2 receptionist minutes" (Ruby help center, read October 7, 2026). Your invoice beats both.

How answering services bill: per minute, monthly bundle, per call or prepaid

Pay per minute, no allowance. AnswerFirst charges $30/month plus $1.60 to $1.95 a minute, with the rate set by usage bands it does not publish, so its costs in the table are ranges. MAP Communications charges $49/month plus $1.37 a minute. Specialty Answering Service sells the same model on its Economy plan.

A flat monthly bundle. This means a fixed price for an allowance, then a rate for every minute past it. The two numbers to compare are the rate inside the bundle when you use all of it, and the rate past it:

ServiceBundleRate inside the bundleRate past the allowance
Go Answer$345/month for 300 minutes$345 ÷ 300 min = $1.15/min$1.50 a minute
MAP Communications$179/month for 125 minutes$179 ÷ 125 min = $1.43/min$1.30 a minute
Moneypenny$422/month for 200 minutes$422 ÷ 200 min = $2.11/min$1.91 a minute
PATLive$479/month for 300 minutes$479 ÷ 300 min = $1.60/min$1.89 a minute
Ruby$720/month for 200 minutes$720 ÷ 200 min = $3.60/min$4.40 a minute
Specialty Answering Service$269/month for 220 minutes$269 ÷ 220 min = $1.22/min$1.44 a minute

The inside rate holds only if you use every minute. A month with half the calls pays the same plan price for half the minutes.

Per call. Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists charges $810/month for 90 calls, then $10.50 a call. ReceptionHQ takes messages the same way: $170/month for 100 calls. Call length does not move a per-call bill, within limits set out further down.

Prepaid call credits. AnswerAmerica takes messages for one credit per call. Its published packages require cash upfront, with unused credits rolling over, rather than a monthly allowance and overage. At 100 calls, the needed purchase costs $150 upfront. The price page and package page disagree on the minimum first purchase, so confirm it before signing up.

One worked example

25 three-minute calls are 75 minutes. PATLive's cheapest way to buy them is $99/month for 50 minutes, plus $2.29 a minute for the other 25 minutes: $156.25. Its pay-as-you-go plan, $49/month plus $2.99 a minute, would bill every one of the 75 minutes at that rate.

MAP Communications runs the other way at the same volume: at 25 calls its pay-as-you-go plan is its cheapest, for $151.75. At 50 calls its Business plan, $179/month for 125 minutes, takes over, and 50 calls cost $211.50.

Where per minute costs less, and where a flat bundle does

Two services trade places at the volume where one's bundle overtakes the other's smaller plan. These pairs change places once between 1 and 2,000 three-minute calls a month, so each has a single break-even:

PairCosts less below the break-evenCosts less above itBreak-even, 3-minute calls

Posh and AnswerForcePoshAnswerForceAbout 55 calls a month
Abby Connect and Smith.ai Virtual Receptionistsper callAbby ConnectSmith.aiAbout 254 calls a month

Our arithmetic, from the same plans as the price table. A break-even moves when either vendor changes a price.

The pattern is the base fee. Go Answer's smallest plan is $175/month (100 minutes) and AnswerForce's is $349/month (200 minutes), so services with a smaller first plan cost less until your calls fill those allowances. The last row runs the other way: at 3-minute calls, Smith.ai's per-call price costs less than Abby Connect's per-minute plans from the break-even up.

Some pairs change places several times, because each vendor's cheapest plan changes as volume grows. MAP Communications costs less than Go Answer at 50 calls, $211.50 against $262.50, and Go Answer costs less at 100 calls, $345 against $403. No single break-even exists for that pair, so the calculator is the place to test your own volume.

AnswerFirst, the pay-per-minute service with no allowance, shows the same shape. At 20 calls it costs $126 to $147 against $175 for Go Answer. At 50 calls it costs $270 to $322.50 against $262.50. We do not print a break-even for AnswerFirst: its per-minute rate is a published range, so the crossing point is a range too.

Lighter tail: a cost range (the rate falls with usage in bands the vendor does not publish). Outlined bar: a service kept out of the ranges because it serves one industry. AnswerAmerica shows upfront prepaid credits that roll over. Source: each vendor's pricing page, read October 7, 2026 to October 12, 2026. Data

PATLive tells its own customers to choose a package this way. Its help center says "Consider the break-even points to determine which package is most cost-effective based on your average minute usage." (help.patlive.com, read October 9, 2026) Its two articles on those points disagree. The current one says "Basic Plan: If you average less than 62 LR minutes per cycle." (help.patlive.com, read October 9, 2026) The older one says "Basic Plan: If you average less than 95 LR minutes per cycle." (help.patlive.com, read October 9, 2026) Neither names the minute plans on PATLive's pricing page, so ask which plan "Basic" is before you rely on either.

How a per-minute service counts a minute

A per-minute price is only as good as the minute behind it. 8 of 15 live and hybrid services that publish a billing increment bill in whole minutes, rounded up: AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, Answering Service Care, LEX Reception, MAP Communications, Nexa, Posh and Ruby (vendor terms, read October 7 to 9, 2026). 4 of 15 bill by the second: AnswerFirst, Answering Legal, Go Answer and Specialty Answering Service.

  • PATLive: 6 seconds, with a 1-minute minimum per call
  • Moneypenny: 30 seconds per call, rounded up after adding wrap-up and dispatch time
  • Abby Connect: Each part rounded to the second, total rounded up to 30 seconds
  • AnswerForce: Whole minute, rounded up
  • Specialty Answering Service: 1 second

A call of 1 minute 25 seconds bills as 2 minutes at a whole-minute service, 1 minute 30 seconds at a 30-second service, and 1 minute 25 seconds at a per-second one. AnswerForce's help center uses that call as its example: "if the duration of a call is one minute and twenty-five seconds, it will be rounded up to two minutes." (answerforce.com, read October 7, 2026) Specialty Answering Service's terms say "We do not round up. So if a call lasts six (6) seconds, then your Service Plan will be charged six (6) seconds." (specialtyansweringservice.net/terms, read October 7, 2026)

The 30-second services add time before they round. Moneypenny's terms give the example: "a call that lasts for 62 seconds, then has 8 seconds of Wrap-up Time, will be billed at 90 seconds." (Moneypenny phone answering terms, read October 7, 2026) Abby Connect's measured time "includes ring time, talk time, and transfer time but excludes any potential hold time" (abby.com terms, read October 7, 2026).

Per-second billing is about the increment, not about what is counted. 11 of 14 live and hybrid services that say what their billable time includes name work after the caller hangs up: AnswerConnect, AnswerFirst, AnswerForce, Answering Service Care, Go Answer, MAP Communications, Moneypenny (US), Nexa, Posh, Ruby and Specialty Answering Service (vendor terms, read October 7 to 9, 2026). Go Answer bills by the second and says "We charge for live receptionist minutes, as well as, summary and disconnection minutes" (goanswer.io/faq, read October 7, 2026).

When a flat monthly plan stops being flat

Unused minutes do not carry over

A bundle bills its full price in a slow month. "Package minutes do not roll over from month to month." (PATLive FAQ, read October 7, 2026) Go Answer: "Go Answer does not offer roll over minutes." (goanswer.io/faq, read October 7, 2026) Specialty Answering Service: "We do not roll over minutes or calls." (SAS help center, read October 7, 2026)

A busy month can move you to a bigger plan

Specialty Answering Service says that past your usage threshold "our system will either upgrade the account for you (if you're still within the first 6 months of being on service)" or alert you (specialtyansweringservice.net/register, read October 7, 2026). At Ruby, "Upgrades are effective immediately and apply to the then-current monthly billing period and at least the subsequent two consecutive billing periods." (ruby.com/terms, read October 7, 2026) At Moneypenny, "the Customer is responsible for the prorated charges plus one full billing cycle at the upgraded plan rate" (Moneypenny phone answering terms, read October 7, 2026). A storm week or a tax season can set your plan for the next three months.

Per call is not unlimited length

Smith.ai bills per call but limits what a call may be: "Calls that do not fall within this scope may incur additional fees to cover time and effort." Its extended intake "cannot exceed an average of 120 seconds" (smith.ai reasonable use policy, read October 7, 2026). ReceptionHQ's terms say "Extended call durations will require a Plus Pack to be added" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026). A per-call count can also be wider than one call: at Specialty Answering Service, "Each inbound or outbound call, including warm transfers and reach on-call, would incur 1 call count." (SAS help center, read October 7, 2026)

"Flat" in the marketing, metered in the terms

Answering Legal's flat-rate post says "the price tag you sign up for at the beginning of the month, is the price tag you'll pay at the end of it" (answeringlegal.com blog, 2019, read October 7, 2026). Its help center: "You'll be charged a per-minute overage rate, detailed in your agreement" (answeringlegal.com help center, read October 7, 2026). It publishes neither the plan price nor that rate.

MAP Communications argues the other side: "You only pay for the time we're actually speaking with your callers - no flat rates, no wasted minutes." (mapcommunications.com, read October 7, 2026) Its terms also bill "any time a receptionist spends completing any information on your call after the caller has hung up" (mapcommunications.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).

Sameday AI, an AI service for home-services businesses, sells "a flat monthly base rate tied to expected usage", and adds "if your expected usage changes materially, your rate may change too" (sameday.ai, read October 7, 2026). Flat, in each case, means flat within a usage level.

What the calculator leaves out

The calculator and the table price the plan. Your invoice can add:

  • Spam and short calls. A per-call plan can count a wrong number as a full call; a per-minute plan bills it at whatever its rounding rule makes it. ReceptionHQ's terms say callers who misdialled or "do not leave messages" still "qualify as inbound calls" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026). Smith.ai says "as long as the lines you forward to us pass Caller ID, you won't be charged for spam" (smith.ai/pricing/receptionists, read October 5, 2026). See which answering services charge for spam calls.
  • Taxes and pass-through fees. PATLive's pricing page says "Prices don't include taxes and fees." (patlive.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026) MAP Communications also adds a per-call telecom fee (mapcommunications.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
  • Setup fees that the pricing page and the terms describe differently. The full list is in answering service hidden fees.

Which billing model fits which situation

Pay as you go around 25 calls: MAP Communications

At 25 three-minute calls, MAP Communications costs $151.75 on its pay-as-you-go plan. AnswerFirst's per-minute cost is a range, $150 to $176.25, that overlaps it. At 20 calls PATLive costs less, $121.90 against $131.20. MAP rounds to the whole minute and bills after-call work with no published cap.

A minute bundle for 100 to 200 calls: Go Answer

At 100 and 200 three-minute calls, Go Answer costs $345 and $700. Its Virtual Receptionist 300 plan works out to $345 ÷ 300 min = $1.15/min when fully used. Its terms describe a setup fee while the pricing page says it charges none (goanswer.io/terms-conditions, read October 7, 2026).

Monthly per-call plan for messages: ReceptionHQ

ReceptionHQ's MessageExpress costs $170 at 100 calls on a monthly plan. AnswerAmerica's upfront credit purchase costs $150 at that volume, with unused credits rolling over. Both take messages without transfers. ReceptionHQ counts misdials as calls, and its Plus Pack rule limits call length.

If you want a per-call bill with live transfers: Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists

Smith.ai charges $9.15 a call at 100 calls, so a long call costs the same as a short one within its 120-second intake rule. At 100 three-minute calls it costs 2.7 times as much as Go Answer, $915 against $345. Whether per call costs less turns on your billed minutes per call: test yours in the calculator.

The flat monthly plans compared here buy an allowance of minutes or calls, with overage past it. PATLive, for example, charges $479/month for 300 minutes, then $1.89 a minute. AnswerAmerica instead sells prepaid call credits that roll over without a monthly plan charge.

Is it cheaper to pay per minute or a flat monthly rate?

It depends on your volume. At 20 three-minute calls a month, AnswerFirst's pay-per-minute plan costs $126 to $147 against $175 for Go Answer's smallest bundle. At 50 calls, AnswerFirst costs $270 to $322.50 and Go Answer $262.50. Divide your billed minutes by your calls and compare at your own volume.

Is per-call pricing better than per-minute pricing?

It depends on how long your calls run. At 100 three-minute calls, Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists costs $9.15 a call and Go Answer, a per-minute service, $3.45 a call. Per-call plans also cap call length: Smith.ai's extended intake "cannot exceed an average of 120 seconds".

What happens to unused minutes on a monthly answering service plan?

At PATLive, Go Answer and Specialty Answering Service, unused package minutes expire. A slow month still incurs the full plan price. AnswerAmerica's unused prepaid call credits roll over, so it has different cash timing.

How these prices were read

Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

  • Clarified LEX Reception trial wording from "None" to "None found": the reviewed vendor pages publish no trial offer, but do not establish that the company never offers one.
  • Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
  • AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
  • Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
  • Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
  • Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
  • Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
  • Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
  • First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
