Our arithmetic: each monthly vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows upfront cash for enough credits, not a monthly fee; unused credits roll over. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

The table prices 14 products: 7 live, 6 AI and one hybrid. A product's category comes from the price index. NextPhone's flat subscription includes unlimited calls, so its modeled bill stays the same across these call volumes. AnswerAmerica only takes messages. The table does not assume its service can transfer callers or book appointments. Abby's cost assumes every minute is handled by a person; mixed AI and human calls can use fewer Abby Minutes. The live and AI category ranges cover other published products too, and omit products limited to a single industry. See the larger live answering cost table and the AI answering service guide for their full sets.

Is an AI answering service cheaper than a live one?

At 50 three-minute calls, the live median is $282 and the AI median is $98. At 100 three-minute calls, they are $406 and $174. At 200 three-minute calls, they are $871 and $299. These are medians of published prices in each category, not paired quotes for identical work. The mix of services with computable costs can change with the volume.

Two companies publish both sides. At 100 three-minute calls, Go Answer AI costs $270 and Go Answer's live service costs $345. The AI plan costs less at 50, 100 and 200 calls under this model. Smith.ai's AI product costs $212.50 at 100 calls; its live receptionist product costs $915. The AI product costs less at those same volumes. Neither comparison prices a human joining an AI call.

An AI plan can cost more than a narrow live option. At 100 three-minute calls, AnswerAmerica needs $150 in prepaid credits for message taking, compared with $199 for Moneypenny AI. Phonely costs $75 to $85 at that volume, less than AnswerAmerica's upfront cash. Phonely's published overage is a range, so its cost is a range. Neither AI price proves that the AI will perform the same work as a live agent.

What counts as a call or minute?

An answered call is not the same unit across vendors. Smith.ai AI says, "Every call answered by your AI Receptionist counts toward your call quota by default." Its help page lets a customer remove "up to 10% of your call quota" for spam and test calls together. (Smith.ai pricing, read October 5, 2026; spam help, read October 7, 2026). Smith.ai's live service also bills per call, but its reasonable use policy limits the scope of extended intake. A long call is therefore not automatically unlimited work.

Moneypenny's AI terms say a call where the caller does not speak to the AI "will not be charged." Noise is the dividing line in that clause, not whether the caller had a useful question. (Moneypenny AI terms, read October 7, 2026). For a comparison at your own call mix, separate silent calls, spam conversations and useful calls rather than treating every ring as billable.

Go Answer AI bills by AI minute. Its pricing page publishes minute allowances and overage, but the vendor file does not find a separate AI rule for what happens during transfer, voicemail or spam. (Go Answer AI pricing, read October 5, 2026). Its live terms say, "Go Answer services are billed by the minute in one second increments." The live FAQ separately says it charges "summary and disconnection minutes." (Go Answer terms, FAQ, read October 7, 2026). Ask whether the AI meter includes those same periods before comparing an invoice to the table.

Abby Connect uses a hybrid unit. Its terms say, "each portion of the call is measured separately and converted to Abby Minutes at its respective rate." AI time consumes half an Abby Minute per minute; human time consumes a full Abby Minute. The terms count ring and transfer time, with the combined total rounded to a 30-second mark. (Abby Connect terms, read October 7, 2026). The table applies its published plan to a three-minute call; actual mixed handling depends on how long each part lasts.

When does the human handoff change the price?

The table shows base answering. If a caller needs a person, the handoff may change the product and the bill. Smith.ai bills live agent involvement separately per call on its AI product, in addition to the plan and any overage. The charge applies only when used (Smith.ai live agent billing, read October 7, 2026). We do not fold it into every call because the number of escalations is unknown.

Moneypenny's AI terms allow human escalation "provided that the Customer maintains an active Phone Answering Service plan alongside the AI Receptionist Service." They also say escalated calls "may incur additional charges depending on the Customer's chosen service bundle." The AI portion is normally not separately charged when the call reaches Moneypenny's human team, with an exception for plans designed around routine escalation. (Moneypenny AI terms, read October 7, 2026). This is the page's key contract distinction: a low AI plan price does not buy a human fallback from this vendor on its own.

Abby's published hybrid plan includes both handling modes in one Abby Minute pool. Its terms measure the AI and human portions separately, so a transfer from AI to human changes the rate at which allowance is consumed. That can fit a business that wants routine AI screening with human calls, but a three-minute call split between the two is not the same as three human minutes. Ask Abby for the overage rate in writing when modelling a mixed call.

When is live answering the better purchase?

Price alone cannot show whether a service completes the task. If the caller needs a receptionist to ask follow-up questions, book a time or transfer a call, check the exact plan's included work. AnswerAmerica's prepaid message service can be useful when a written message is enough. Its price page describes message taking and says there is no monthly charge; it does not offer transfers or booking in the pages we read. Credits roll over, so the $150 shown for 100 calls is cash to buy enough credits, not a recurring monthly plan fee.

ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus is a live per-call option with transfers. At 100 three-minute calls, its base is $260. Its terms allow a per-transfer charge and a charge outside listed weekday hours. (ReceptionHQ pricing, read October 5, 2026; terms, read October 7, 2026). If your calls regularly need those services, compare the full expected invoice and the scope of the AI alternative.

For calls whose length varies, a per-call service may look stable. The cap is still the vendor's work policy. Smith.ai's extended intake policy says it "cannot exceed an average of 120 seconds." (Smith.ai reasonable use, read October 9, 2026). Per-minute live services instead charge for the time they count, and rounding and after-call work can matter as much as the advertised rate. This page cannot measure answer quality; its comparisons are published billing terms at a shared volume.

What can make the AI bill rise?

An overage rate can turn a lower entry price into a higher usage bill. Go Answer AI charges $95/month for 100 minutes and $0.95 a minute past that allowance. At 100 three-minute calls, its cheapest plan costs $270. Compare that figure to the live plan's $345, not just the entry tags. The same method applies to every row. The calculator lets you change call count and average length.

Spam rules also differ. AnswerAmerica's price page says "Wrong Numbers/Hoax Calls FREE" while its terms say "All calls will be charged one credit including hangups, wrong numbers and marketing calls" in a clause effective March 1, 2026. The terms control our cost model. (price page, terms, read October 9, 2026). On Smith.ai AI, answered spam counts by default and the removal allowance also covers test calls. Moneypenny excludes silent calls, but its terms do not exclude every spam conversation. See the spam billing comparison before using a raw phone log as a cost estimate.

Moneypenny's AI terms add a one-time setup fee whose amount is not published, and require the first and last service months up front. (Moneypenny AI terms, read October 7, 2026). Smith.ai AI's paid plan has a 30-day cancellation notice. Go Answer AI's free trial requires a card and the selected plan activates after the trial. These terms change cash outlay and exit cost without changing the table's base usage math. The hidden fees guide covers those bill items across live services.

Which option fits which call pattern?

For AI answering at a low published base cost: Phonely costs $75 to $85 at 100 three-minute calls. It costs less than the other AI services with computable prices in the index at 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls. Its pricing page gives an overage range, so the bill is a range. Ask how it counts spam, short calls and human transfer before deciding from price alone. (Phonely pricing, read October 5, 2026).

For one vendor with both a live and AI price: Go Answer publishes both products. At 100 three-minute calls, the AI product is $270 and the live product is $345. Its AI page does not state separately how transfer time and spam use minutes. Compare the service script, then the bill. Go Answer's pricing page details the live rules.

For a human escalation option: Smith.ai AI can transfer to its human team, with separately billed involvement. At 100 three-minute calls, the AI base is $212.50 and the live product is $915. The better purchase depends on how many calls escalate. Ask the vendor to model your escalation count in writing.

For messages with unused credit rollover: AnswerAmerica takes prepaid credits. At 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls, the cash needed for enough credits is $80, $150 and $280. The credit balance can carry forward, but transfers and appointments are outside this message-only comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does AI answering cost compared with live answering?

At 100 three-minute calls, published AI answering services cost $75 to $270 and live services cost $150 to $1,160. The live low end is AnswerAmerica's prepaid message taking, where credits roll over. These ranges compare base published usage prices, not equal handling features.

Is an AI answering service cheaper at 200 calls?

At 200 three-minute calls, the AI median is $299 and the live median is $871. Each median covers services with computable published prices at that volume. Handoff fees and add-ons are outside the base comparison.

Do AI answering services bill spam calls?

Smith.ai AI counts answered calls by default and lets customers remove a capped share that combines spam and test calls. Moneypenny AI does not charge if the caller makes no noise, but its published terms do not exclude a spoken spam call. Ask each vendor what counts before using a ring count to forecast the bill.

Does AI to human transfer cost extra?

Smith.ai AI adds a charge for live agent involvement when used. Moneypenny requires a separate phone answering plan for escalation to its team, and its terms say additional charges may apply. Abby Connect meters AI and human portions separately within its hybrid plan.

Can a live answering service cost less than AI?

Yes. At 100 three-minute calls, AnswerAmerica's prepaid message service needs $150 in cash for enough credits, compared with $199 for Moneypenny AI. AnswerAmerica takes messages and does not include transfers or appointments in the pages we read.

How these prices were read

Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.
