MAP Communications costs $403 for 100 three-minute calls a month; Go Answer, a lower-cost alternative at that volume, costs $345 (prices checked October 12, 2026). MAP's monthly plan arithmetic leaves out separate fees whose amounts it does not publish.

What does MAP Communications cost?

MAP starts at $49/month (pay per use at $1.37/min). Its cheapest published plans for 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls cost $211.50, $403 and $777. The MAP pricing page shows all four plans and the billing rules behind those totals.

The plan cards advertise no long-term contract and English and Spanish coverage (MAP pricing, read October 5, 2026). The terms, read October 7, 2026, add whole-minute rounding, time spent on after-call work, a per-call Telecom Fee and three flat fees. MAP does not publish the amounts of the Compliance/Regulation Use, Technology or Holiday fees. The modeled costs below exclude them, so request a sample invoice before comparing a quote to these figures.

Our arithmetic: each service's cheapest published plan at the stated volume, plus published overage, for 3-minute calls. MAP's Telecom Fee and unpublished flat fees, plus other vendors' taxes, pass-through fees, setup charges and add-ons, are excluded. How we price.

Among the nine priced alternatives in the table, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus has the lowest modeled cost at 100 three-minute calls: $260. Its after-hours and transfer charges can change the invoice. MAP costs $211.50 versus Go Answer's $262.50 at 50 calls, but Go Answer costs $345 versus MAP's $403 at 100. A short monthly base and a longer plan allowance can make the order change more than once as volume grows, so these are comparisons at the named volumes, not a single break-even claim.

What each alternative does better and worse than MAP

ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus

Better: $260 at 100 calls and a per-call allowance. A call that runs longer than three minutes does not automatically use more units under the standard plan. Worse: ReceptionHQ charges separately for transfers and after-hours calls. Its terms also say, "Extended call durations will require a Plus Pack" (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026). A long intake should be quoted on that basis.

Go Answer

Better: $345 at 100 calls; its clock runs by the second instead of MAP's whole-minute increments. Worse: the meter includes "summary and disconnection minutes" (Go Answer FAQ, read October 7, 2026). Its FAQ calls for written cancellation notice, and its marketing and contract disagree about whether setup is free. See the Go Answer pricing analysis.

Specialty Answering Service

Better: $384.20 at 100 calls and second-level billing. Its minute policy, read October 7, 2026, caps robocalls, faxes and dead air at a short billable duration. Worse: its terms, read October 7, 2026, allow plan upgrades matching usage, and it charges for call documentation and hold time. Switching from MAP to Specialty does not eliminate post-call minutes.

AnswerForce

Better: $389 at 100 calls. AnswerForce's direct plan page, read October 7, 2026, publishes the plan, although its main pricing path asks for contact details. Worse: $349 at 50 calls, above MAP's $211.50. Its terms, read October 7, 2026, set a minimum period of 90 calendar days and bill hold, transfer and post-call work.

Answering Service Care

Better: $774 at 200 calls, just below MAP's $777. Worse: its terms, read October 9, 2026, count usage "from the inception of a call in our systems through its completion and any post-call related work", then round whole minutes up. A setup charge and an annual maintenance fee also sit outside the modeled total.

PATLive

Better: PATLive's terms, read October 7, 2026, stop billing after the receptionist disconnects, while MAP bills after-call work. That can matter when messages are detailed. Worse: $479 at 100 calls, above MAP's $403. PATLive counts hold and transfer attempts. Read the PATLive pricing analysis for its trial and number terms.

Moneypenny

Better: its phone terms, read October 7, 2026, cap wrap-up time per call and round in shorter increments than MAP. Worse: $613 at 100 calls, above MAP's $403. Moneypenny asks for the first and last month up front and does not publish the setup fee amount. VoiceNation is now Moneypenny, so those names do not represent separate alternatives.

Ruby

Better: Ruby's pricing page, read October 5, 2026, says setup, activation and onboarding carry no additional fee. MAP's terms name additional fees. Worse: $1,160 at 100 calls, above MAP's $403. Ruby's terms, read October 7, 2026, count hold and after-call work and round to the next minute, so the higher modeled price does not buy a narrower billing clock.

Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists

Better: its live receptionist pricing, read October 5, 2026, prices per call and excludes qualified spam when caller ID passes. Worse: $915 at 100 calls, above MAP's $403. Smith.ai's reasonable-use policy, read October 7, 2026, says extended intake must stay within an average call length and can draw additional fees. Its booking add-on applies per call across the plan, not just to calls that get booked.

Where MAP is still the better buy

MAP costs less than Go Answer at 50 three-minute calls: $211.50 versus $262.50. At 100 calls it costs less than PATLive, Moneypenny, Ruby and Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, as the table shows. These are modeled plan costs, before MAP's extra fees. MAP's plan page, read October 5, 2026, also includes English and Spanish coverage with every plan, and its service page, read October 7, 2026, says after-hours minutes use the normal rate. Holiday calls can still trigger its unpublished Holiday Fee. For teams paging several people after one call, MAP's FAQ, read October 7, 2026, says multi-recipient dispatch carries no additional charge and is treated as one recipient for billing. Get that message-delivery setup into the written quote.

MAP trial: 7 days, no card. Its published trial page says no card is required. That gives a buyer time to measure real call duration and post-call work before committing. Ask MAP to identify each line on a sample invoice and to confirm the cancellation date in writing. The trial page's "cancel anytime" wording and the terms' written notice clause do not say the same thing (both read October 7, 2026).

Which alternative fits which situation?

For short calls and transfer-light work: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus. At 100 three-minute calls it models at $260, the lowest cost among the priced alternatives in this table. Ask what your after-hours, transfer and longer-call mix would add.

For minute billing with less rounding: Go Answer. At 100 calls it models at $345 compared with MAP's $403. Ask how long its billable summaries and disconnections take for your call types.

For a brief burst of calls: MAP itself. At 50 calls it models at $211.50 compared with Go Answer's $262.50. The fee schedule can erase a narrow plan-price edge, so compare complete invoices.

How do you switch from MAP without losing calls or your number?

  1. Identify the number you advertise. MAP's terms, read October 7, 2026, say you have "no property rights" to a number MAP assigns. They do not promise you can port it. If you forward your own number, retain control of that number and its carrier account before changing vendors.
  2. Find the next invoice due date. MAP requires "written notice received by us at least 1 month prior to your next invoice due date" (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026). Its FAQ, read October 7, 2026, describes a 30-day notice. Request a written effective cancellation date.
  3. Overlap the services. Configure the new answering instructions and test normal, after-hours, Spanish and transfer calls while MAP still answers. Then update forwarding from the carrier side.
  4. Close the account in writing. MAP's terms say subscription fees are non-refundable and partial months can be charged (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026). Check the final invoice for the separate fees and get confirmation that forwarding and access ended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are cheaper MAP Communications competitors at 100 calls?

Among the nine priced alternatives in the table, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus ($260), Go Answer ($345), Specialty Answering Service ($384.20) and AnswerForce ($389) cost less than MAP's $403 for 100 three-minute calls. These totals exclude extra fees.

Is MAP Communications worth it for low call volume?

At 50 three-minute calls, MAP costs $211.50, less than Go Answer's $262.50. MAP still rounds to whole minutes and bills post-call work. A sample invoice and a real call log are needed to test whether that modeled advantage survives.

Does MAP charge for work after a caller hangs up?

Yes. Its terms, read October 7, 2026, count "any time a receptionist spends completing any information on your call after the caller has hung up" and other work on the account. The terms give no cap for that time. Ask MAP to show it separately in a sample usage report.

Who owns MAP Communications?

MAP says it is a "100% Employee-Owned Company" on its Who We Are page, read October 7, 2026. Its terms name Map Communications, Inc., Alert and Calling Inn as parties in a collective contract definition. That shared wording alone does not establish that MAP and Nexa-owned Alert share an owner. See the ownership map.

How these prices were read

Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
  • Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
  • First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
