As of October 12, 2026, published live answering plans and prepaid packages cost $150 to $1,160 (low end AnswerAmerica, prepaid message-taking only, no transfers; unused credits roll over) for 100 three-minute calls a month. Before signing, ask how a call is counted, what extra work is billed, when you can leave and whether you can take your number and recordings.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.
The table gives a comparable starting point, not a final invoice. AnswerFirst's price is a range because its page does not publish the usage bands that set the per-minute rate. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus bills per handled call and charges separately for transfers. Smith.ai's live plan also bills per call, with add-ons outside these totals. Put the tasks you actually need on the quote, then compare the same call log.
Which records should you bring to the sales call?
Bring one recent month of calls with timestamps, durations and the number of transfers. Mark wrong numbers, spam, missed calls, after-hours calls and appointments. Ask each seller to price that file, then ask them to identify every line item they excluded. A three-minute average hides a long intake call and a string of short hang-ups. The cost calculator lets you change volume and average length, while per-minute versus per-call pricing explains where the models diverge.
How does the service count a call and the work after it?
Ask: "When does the clock start and stop, what is the rounding increment, and do hold, transfer, notes or research use my allowance?" Here are the published answers for the same services in the price table.
| Service | Rounding | Time beyond conversation | Unwanted calls |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnswerConnect | Whole minute, rounded up | Hold, transfers and patches, after-call work; chat and outbound calls use the same minutes | Only the first 30 calls under 30 seconds each month are free |
| AnswerFirst | 1 second | Message processing, research and account updates; 6 seconds per API call or inbound text; hold and ring time not billed | Billed ("The answer is YES"); numbers cannot be blocked |
| Go Answer | 1 second | Summary and disconnection minutes; voicemail and IVR $0.15/min; hold and ring time not billed | Obvious spam and robocalls not charged (who decides is not published) |
| MAP Communications | Whole minute, rounded up | After-call work with no cap, plus other work on your account | No exclusion; MAP says spam is "not something we have control over" |
| PATLive | 6 seconds, with a 1-minute minimum per call | Hold during lookups and transfer attempts; queue time and time after the receptionist disconnects are not billed | No exemption for spam calls (spam chats are free) |
| ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus | Per call | Transfers $0.30 per call; failed transfers $0.15; after-hours surcharge $0.30 per call outside 5am to 7pm Phoenix time on weekdays, all weekend and on federal holidays | Calls under 5 seconds free; telemarketing free only if ReceptionHQ identifies it; misdials billed |
| Ruby | 60 seconds, rounded up per call | Hold time and after-call work; talk after a transfer not billed | Opt-in robocall filter not billed |
| Smith.ai live receptionists | Per call; extended intake must average 120 seconds or less | Add-ons charged per call | Spam, misdials and callers who leave no message are not counted when caller ID passes |
AnswerFirst's own invoice guide says live time includes "Talk, Message Processing, Delivering & Researching and Account Updating." (AnswerFirst invoice guide, read October 7, 2026) That is a broader meter than talk time. Go Answer's FAQ names "summary and disconnection minutes," including the gap after the caller hangs up. (Go Answer FAQ, read October 7, 2026) Ask for a sample invoice that marks those minutes separately.
Ask what happens to a wrong number or a caller who disconnects quickly. AnswerConnect waives the first 30 calls under 30 seconds in a month, then bills further short calls. AnswerFirst says "The answer is YES" when asked whether spam, robocalls and solicitations are billed. (AnswerFirst spam billing, read October 7, 2026) The complete policies are in spam calls and answering-service billing.
What overage, setup and other fees will appear on the bill?
Ask for the plan price, allowance, overage rate, setup charge and a list of fees outside the usage rate. Ask when overage is charged, whether unused allowance rolls over and how the plan changes during a spike. The price table above shows each service's published entry and overage; "not published" means the sales proposal must supply the number.
| Service | Published setup answer | Contract summary |
|---|---|---|
| AnswerConnect | $49.99 on Entry and Standard; none on Growth | 90-day minimum, then written notice; a partial month is billed in full |
| AnswerFirst | Charged on every account, amount not published | No contract unless the proposal sets one; dedicated agents carry a 2-year minimum |
| Go Answer | Marketing says no setup fees; the terms say $50 or $75 | "Cancel anytime", but the FAQ asks for 30 days written notice; no proration |
| MAP Communications | Not published | Month-to-month; written notice one month before the next invoice |
| PATLive | None ("doesn't charge setup fees"; the terms allow one) | Month-to-month |
| ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus | None | Month-to-month; email 3 days before renewal |
| Ruby | No setup fee on the pricing page; the terms allow setup or activation fees | 30-day contract that renews automatically |
| Smith.ai live receptionists | None | Cancel 30 days before the cycle ends or the next month is billed; annual plans prepaid and non-refundable |
Go Answer's pricing page answers its setup question with "No, we don't charge any setup fees." Its terms, however, say it charges one on each account. (pricing page, read October 5, 2026; terms, read October 7, 2026) Have the provider reconcile contradictory documents in the order form. MAP's terms also name a telecom fee and other fees whose amounts vary or are not stated on its plan cards. (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026) The hidden fees guide holds the fuller fee list.
When can you cancel, and what happens to your number?
Ask for the minimum term, renewal date, exact notice deadline, cancellation channel, refund rule and the order for porting a number. A month-to-month label does not answer all six questions.
AnswerConnect's terms say "a minimum period of 90 calendar days," while its direct plans page says "No hidden fees, no contracts, no notice period." (AnswerConnect terms, read October 7, 2026; direct plans, read October 9, 2026) Ruby's terms set a 30-day contract that renews every 30 days. They allow cancellation by email or phone before the next invoice date, effective at the end of the current period. (Ruby terms, read October 7, 2026) Put the exact final service date in writing.
PATLive says numbers remaining on an account become its property when cancellation takes effect. Its help page says to start a port with your new provider before closing the account. (PATLive terms, porting help, read October 7, 2026) AnswerFirst's help center says it charges a fee to transfer number ownership away, and its terms require written notice for a transferred-in number. (AnswerFirst number guide, read October 7, 2026) Get the number ownership and port timing in the signed record, especially if you advertise a vendor-issued number.
What service level, recordings and data export do you get?
Ask for the answering target, its measurement period, exclusions and credit remedy. Ask who can change scripts, how emergency transfers work, whether recordings are made, how long they remain accessible and how you export them. Ask whether the vendor returns call logs and scripts when service ends. A claimed answer speed without a remedy is a sales statement.
AnswerFirst publishes a service-level agreement with platform availability and call-abandonment targets, plus credits when those targets are missed. Its abandonment metric counts calls presented for at least 18 seconds, and the customer has to request credits. (AnswerFirst service-level agreement, read October 7, 2026) Its terms say it need not retain voice or call recordings longer than 10 days, while its FAQ says calls are available for up to 90 days. (terms, FAQ, read October 7, 2026) That conflict is this page's sharpest data question: ask what retention period the signed agreement guarantees, then export recordings on a schedule that fits it.
For coverage, ask who answers after hours, which language is staffed at the hours you need, and whether a holiday changes the rate. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus has an after-hours call surcharge; PATLive says Spanish support runs during a narrower window than English. Their answers and source links are in the after-hours and bilingual guides. Make a test call during the hours you actually need and compare its timestamp and disposition with the report.
What should the final proposal contain?
Ask the seller to send one packet with the plan and allowance, overage schedule, setup and add-on fees, call counting rules, service hours, scripts, escalation steps, recording retention, number rights, renewal notice and cancellation method. Save the version that will govern the account. An email promise that does not appear in the agreement may not settle a billing dispute.
Use the same sample call log for each proposal. Mark every answer that the provider has not published as "ask in writing," rather than assuming a favorable rule. If the vendor changes the plan after seeing your call mix, rerun its numbers at 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls and at your actual average length. The point is to compare the service you will receive, not the smallest figure on a plan card.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important billing question to ask an answering service?
Ask exactly when the meter starts and stops, what rounding applies to each call, and whether notes, transfers and research use your allowance. AnswerFirst and Go Answer publish after-call billing; their price cards alone do not show how much of your own traffic will use it.
Can an answering service charge for spam calls?
Yes. AnswerFirst expressly bills spam and solicitation calls. AnswerConnect waives only a limited number of short calls, while other policies depend on a filter or the vendor's classification. Ask for the rule that applies to your plan in writing.
Does month-to-month mean I can leave without another bill?
No. The renewal date, notice window and refund rule control the final charge. Ruby's contract renews every 30 days and cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period; AnswerConnect has a 90-day minimum in its terms. Read the signed documents, not only the plan card.
Can I keep the number the answering service gives me?
It depends on the vendor and when you port it. PATLive requires port-out before the account closes. AnswerFirst publishes a transfer-of-ownership fee. Ask who owns the assigned number and complete any port before cancellation becomes effective.
How long does an answering service keep call recordings?
Ask for a retention period in the signed agreement. AnswerFirst's terms say it need not keep recordings longer than 10 days, while its FAQ describes availability up to 90 days. If recordings matter to your business, export them on a schedule tied to the contract term.
How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
