Our arithmetic: each monthly plan's cheapest published option at 3-minute calls, plus published overage. AnswerAmerica is upfront cash for enough call credits; unused credits roll over. Night, holiday, transfer, setup, telecom and other fees are excluded. How we price.
The table is a base cost comparison, not an overnight invoice estimate. Vendors differ in what they count as a call or billable minute. Nexa publishes its coverage and terms but gives plan prices after a sales step, so its cost cells read quote only. AnswerConnect publishes direct plan prices and overage rates. The price index uses those published figures in its cost cells.
What after-hours coverage actually includes
After-hours service can mean message taking, a live transfer to the on-call person, appointment booking or emergency dispatch. Those are separate jobs. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress takes messages, while ReceptionistPlus offers transfers. AnswerForce says its staff can collect emergency details and call an on-call technician (AnswerForce home services, read October 7, 2026). A provider's overnight availability alone does not show which of those actions your plan includes.
Write the call path before comparing prices. For an ordinary inquiry, decide whether a message waits until morning or gets sent immediately. For a genuine emergency, define the details the agent must collect, the order of people to call, and what happens if nobody picks up. Ask if the service charges for each outbound attempt, waiting time, or roster changes. Those charges can matter more than the published base plan for a small emergency queue.
Call routing also affects the buyer's number. Forwarding a line you own is different from advertising a number assigned by the answering service. If the service supplies the number, read its porting and cancellation clause before putting it on a sign or in ads. AnswerAmerica's terms say it does not guarantee an assigned number will remain available after termination (AnswerAmerica terms, read October 9, 2026). PATLive's terms say numbers left on the account become its property after cancellation (PATLive terms, read October 7, 2026). The questions to ask an answering service guide covers the handoff questions.
Night, weekend and holiday surcharges
The surcharge question needs three answers: which hours trigger it, what unit is charged, and whether the trial includes it. A plan can advertise continuous answering and still charge more when a receptionist answers outside the vendor's core hours. The table below reports published rules, rather than guessing at a fee where the vendor publishes none. A dash in the rule column would hide that distinction, so each row states the evidence.
| Service | Night and weekend rule | Holiday rule | What to ask before signing |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReceptionHQ MessageExpress and ReceptionistPlus | Extra per answered call outside its Phoenix weekday window | Same surcharge on US federal holidays | Ask for a bill using your actual call hours and transfer mix. |
| MAP Communications | No separate night charge found in the pages read | Terms list a holiday fee without its amount | Ask for the holiday fee and other pass-through fees in the proposal. |
| Nexa | No separate night charge found in the pages read | Terms list a fee on named holidays without its amount | Request the Service Plan and fee schedule. |
| AnswerAmerica | Its price page says no extra charge outside normal hours | Package page says no holiday fee | Check the prepaid balance and inactivity rule. |
| AnswerForce | Says after-hours and weekends are included in a live plan | Says holidays are included | Check plan minutes and outbound dispatch time. |
| AnswerFirst | Pricing page says no extra fee for nights and weekends | Says no extra fee for holidays | Check the proposed contract term and billed time. |
| AnswerConnect | Says continuous coverage has no extra charge | Same coverage statement includes holidays | Ask where an overflow call is answered and how overage works. |
| Posh | Says no surcharge after hours or on weekends | Says no holiday surcharge | Check the contract's card and late-payment clauses. |
ReceptionHQ's terms define after hours as outside 5am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, in Phoenix local time. That makes every weekend call subject to the surcharge. Its FAQ says the surcharge does not apply during a free trial. The overnight trial therefore does not show the full paid bill (ReceptionHQ terms and FAQ, read October 7, 2026). The fee also differs by plan and billing unit; obtain a sample invoice for the exact plan rather than carrying one figure across the product line.
MAP's terms name a holiday fee for labor expense but do not give its amount (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026). Nexa's terms list named holidays with an extra fee, also without an amount (Nexa terms, read October 7, 2026). These are published fees with unpublished amounts, not evidence that a night call has a fee. If a quote includes either vendor, ask for the holiday schedule in writing. The broader hidden fees guide compares other add-ons.
AnswerAmerica says, "We operate 24/7/365 and we don't charge you more for calls outside normal hours" (AnswerAmerica price page, read October 9, 2026). Its package page says "No Holiday Fees" (AnswerAmerica packages, read October 9, 2026). AnswerForce says, "You pay nothing extra for after hours call answering, when used as part of your plan" (AnswerForce direct plans, read October 7, 2026). These statements address time-of-day fees; they do not cancel ordinary usage charges or add-ons.
Who answers your overnight calls?
Ask the vendor for the location and staffing model for the hours when your office is closed, not just a daytime staffing claim. ReceptionHQ says its US teams answer during its daytime window, while "overnight calls are handled by our equally skilled, English-speaking team in Australia" (ReceptionHQ FAQ, read October 7, 2026). That is a concrete difference for a business that promised callers domestic handling. The vendor does not state that the Australian team can provide live Spanish overnight.
AnswerConnect says US clients' calls are primarily answered in the US, but peak-hour overflow can go to its staff in the UK or Canada (AnswerConnect location FAQ, read October 7, 2026). Its statement concerns overflow, not a published overnight schedule. Ask whether your specific night shift has the same routing. Do not infer that every US client's night call leaves the country.
AnswerForce says its receptionists are employed by the company and based in the US (AnswerForce bilingual FAQ, read October 7, 2026). The page does not separately promise a particular overnight location or agent group. Ask whether calls use the same team and scripts throughout the day. For a bilingual queue, also ask about overnight language coverage: PATLive's help page gives Spanish hours of 8am to 10pm Eastern while it advertises English answering around the clock (PATLive bilingual help, read October 7, 2026).
If location matters because your scripts contain customer data, request the actual staffing and data-processing terms. A marketing phrase such as "US-based" may describe the main team, while the routing rule describes what happens at night or during a surge. Ask who can read transcripts, where they are stored, and whether a subcontractor handles overflow. Get the answers in the service agreement or order form.
How answering services bill overnight work
Per minute. PATLive's entry is $49/month (pay per use at $2.99/min). The bill can grow when a transfer keeps the caller on hold, because PATLive's terms include hold time in the billable minute (PATLive terms, read October 7, 2026). Ask whether a dispatcher calling your on-call person uses the same pool of minutes.
Per call. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus prices answered calls rather than their length. Its entry is $35/month (pay per use at $2.99/call). The terms separately bill successful and unsuccessful transfers, and long calls can need a Plus Pack (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026). Per-call billing therefore does not mean every dispatch attempt is included.
Prepaid credits. AnswerAmerica's entry is $50 prepaid for 34 calls. One call spends one credit, and unused credits roll over (AnswerAmerica packages, read October 9, 2026). The amount needed to cover a month of calls is upfront cash. The terms also say inactivity can consume a credit, so compare the package balance as well as the apparent per-call rate.
Published allowance with overage. AnswerForce's entry is $349/month (200 minutes). At 100 three-minute calls its cheapest plan costs $389, against $395 for AnswerConnect on the same call basis. That comparison excludes setup and any charge outside the published plan math. It does not establish which service answers a particular night call better.
What your after-hours volume costs
At 50 three-minute calls, AnswerAmerica needs $80 upfront for credits. At 100, it needs $150 upfront, compared with a $170 monthly MessageExpress base bill. The former costs less in cash required for this volume, but both take messages rather than transferring an urgent caller. At 200 calls, AnswerAmerica needs $280 upfront, with unused credits carried forward.
For transfers, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus has a $260 base cost at 100 calls. The same volume on MessageExpress has a $170 base cost and no live transfers. That difference is a product difference before the ReceptionistPlus transfer and after-hours charges. A business that needs an agent to reach a technician should compare the transfer plan, not treat the message plan as an interchangeable low quote.
Calculate your own night volume separately from daytime calls. Enter the calls and average length in the answering service cost calculator. It uses the same published plan math as this table. Then request a vendor quote that adds the after-hours, holiday, transfer and roster fees for your actual schedule. The calculator does not claim to compute fees whose amounts are not in a published plan.
Which coverage fits your call path?
Message taking when tomorrow is soon enough
AnswerAmerica's prepaid model avoids a monthly subscription, and its public page says time of day does not change the call rate. At 100 calls, enough credits require $150 upfront. MessageExpress offers a monthly per-call plan at $170 before after-hours fees. The first fits an irregular queue that can wait for a message; the second offers a regular monthly bill. Check the assigned-number terms on either service before publishing that number.
Live transfer to an on-call person
ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus has a published per-call base and live transfers. Its terms separately price the transfer and the night surcharge, so the table base is not a full dispatch estimate. AnswerForce also publishes plan prices and describes an emergency call path that includes calling an on-call technician. Ask both vendors to demonstrate the escalation script and to state which outbound attempts consume usage. A missed transfer that merely generates a message may not satisfy an emergency policy.
An overnight queue that may spike
AnswerConnect has published direct plans and a separate FAQ on overflow locations. Its $395 price at 100 calls follows published allowances and overage rates. If a campaign or storm could push beyond the allowance, check which rate applies and when it is charged. Its help center says it may charge overage mid-cycle (AnswerConnect billing FAQ, read October 7, 2026). Plan a call path for a spike, then verify the location and rate in writing.
Live versus AI after hours
An AI receptionist can take an initial call without a staffed overnight shift, but the decision is about the action after it detects urgency. If an emergency call must reach a person, ask where it transfers, whether that person is your staff or the vendor's, and what happens after a failed connection. Some vendors sell a human plan and an AI plan under the same brand; the table above prices the human service named in each row.
The live versus AI cost comparison uses the same call volume for each type. That page handles the price comparison. For after-hours buying, test the escalation path in the contract and script. A low base price does not tell you whether a water leak gets routed to the right on-call person, or whether a caller receives a message and waits until morning.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an after-hours answering service cost?
At 100 three-minute calls, the live-service median is $406 (prices checked October 12, 2026). That figure uses published plan math. Night, holiday, transfer and other fees may add to the bill, and AnswerAmerica's prepaid cash purchase is not a monthly subscription.
Do answering services charge more at night?
Some publish an extra night fee, while others say the same plan covers nights. ReceptionHQ's terms charge outside its Phoenix weekday window, including weekends. AnswerForce, AnswerFirst and AnswerConnect say they include after-hours coverage without a separate time-of-day surcharge. Read each plan's usage and add-on terms too.
Does an after-hours free trial show the paid bill?
Not necessarily. ReceptionHQ's FAQ says it waives its after-hours surcharge during the free trial. A night-heavy trial can therefore understate the later invoice. Ask for a sample paid-period bill based on the trial's actual calls, transfers and call times.
Where do overnight receptionists work?
The location depends on the vendor and routing conditions. ReceptionHQ says overnight calls go to its team in Australia. AnswerConnect says US calls may overflow to the UK or Canada during peaks. AnswerForce says its receptionists are US-based but does not publish a separate overnight staffing map. Ask for the specific plan's night and overflow routing.
Can an after-hours service dispatch emergencies?
Some offer an escalation path, but availability and dispatch are different terms. AnswerForce says it can collect emergency details and call an on-call technician. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus offers call transfers and separately bills transfer attempts. Give the vendor a written definition of urgency, an on-call roster and a failed-transfer rule before relying on it.
How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Clarified Alert Communications and Nexa trial summaries from "None" to "None found": the reviewed public pages do not offer trial terms, but do not establish that no private offer exists.
- Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
