Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows prepaid cash outlay for enough credits; unused credits roll over. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees, night surcharges and add-ons are excluded. How we price.
How we picked
The table prices live people who answer at any hour, not claims about response quality. Each cost uses the same three-minute call. It does not assume that an after-hours caller only needs a message. AnswerAmerica is narrower: it takes messages, with no published transfer or appointment-booking service. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus can transfer calls, but the table leaves out its after-hours and transfer charges. Read the coverage terms beneath the plan price before choosing a night line.
At 50, 100 and 200 calls, AnswerAmerica has the lowest published cash outlay in this table: $80, $150 and $280. For the other 11 services in the table, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus has the lowest base-plan cost at those volumes: $135, $260 and $505. Its night charges are separate. These price rankings do not rank answer quality, dispatch success or the final invoice.

These are the vendors' published rules, not a promise that every call will be answered within a set time. Sources and read dates for the exact clauses are below. For an overnight-only line, see after-hours answering service pricing; for language coverage, see bilingual answering service pricing.
Which 24/7 answering service fits the call?
Best for messages with prepaid creditAnswerAmerica
At 100 three-minute calls, $150 buys enough prepaid call credits. Unused credits roll over. Its price page says it operates "24/7/365" and does not charge more outside normal hours; its package page says "No Holiday Fees" (read October 9, 2026). The terms require advance payment and say every call, including a hangup or wrong number, uses a credit. Its price page says those calls are free. Use the terms when forecasting. It is a fit when the overnight task is to take and deliver a message, not to patch an emergency caller through.
Best for low-volume call transferReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
At 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls, the base costs are $135, $260 and $505. A receptionist can transfer a call, unlike the published AnswerAmerica message service. The catch: the terms add a per-call charge "outside of 5am to 7pm Monday to Friday local time in Phoenix, Arizona" and on federal holidays. A transfer has its own charge; the free trial waives the after-hours charge (FAQ, read October 7, 2026). For a mostly overnight call stream, the base table understates the bill. The ReceptionHQ pricing detail covers the full fee stack.
Best for Spanish-speaking callers at nightMAP Communications
At 50 and 100 three-minute calls, MAP costs $211.50 and $403 before fees. Its bilingual page says live bilingual agents answer "including nights, weekends, and holidays" (read October 7, 2026). The catch: the terms impose "a flat fee charged on seven major holidays" without publishing the amount or naming all the days. MAP also bills after-call work and rounds up to a whole minute. Ask for the holiday schedule in writing before routing a Spanish line to it. The bilingual comparison covers other vendors' narrower Spanish hours.
Best for scheduled emergency dispatchAnswerForce
At 100 three-minute calls, AnswerForce costs $389 before extra services. Its home-services page says receptionists can "call out to your on-call techs to dispatch them" and that evenings, weekends and holidays are included (read October 7, 2026). The catch: the help center calls the arrangement month by month, while the terms specify a minimum of 90 calendar days. Hold and transfer time use plan minutes. A dispatch script and on-call list are useful only if the right technician can be reached; ask how failed attempts are handled.
Best for no stated night or holiday surchargeSpecialty Answering Service
At 50 and 100 three-minute calls, Specialty costs $231 and $384.20. Its registration FAQ says "We do not charge any extra or hidden fees" for holiday, weekend or after-hours calls (read October 7, 2026). The catch: the terms allow paid programming changes and do not let a customer port away an assigned number. Its premium On-Call feature is priced in the customer portal, not on the public rate card. Ask for that feature's price if the receptionist must call through an escalation tree. More in Specialty pricing.
The rest of the table
AnswerConnect publishes "24/7/365 coverage at no extra charge" on its live answering page, read October 7, 2026. At 100 calls, the plan math is $395. The contract has a 90-day minimum despite its marketing saying "No fixed contract"; hold, patching and after-call work consume minutes. Its Spanish option is an add-on, so a night bilingual quote needs that line included.
Go Answer lists "24/7 Live Answering" on its pricing page, read October 5, 2026. At 100 calls its published cost is $345. The FAQ says cancellation requires written notice, and its terms permit a setup fee despite a no-setup claim on the pricing page (read October 7, 2026). Summary and disconnection time use plan minutes. See Go Answer pricing.
Moneypenny says its 24/7 service has "no additional cost" on its phone-answering page, read October 7, 2026. At 100 calls, the published plan costs $613. The phone terms bill wrap-up and dispatch legs, require the first and last month up front, and mention a setup fee that the plan page does not price. A long overnight dispatch can exceed the table's three-minute assumption.
PATLive says overnight, weekend and holiday calls cost nothing extra in its FAQ, read October 7, 2026. At 100 calls, the plan cost is $479. The terms impose a one-minute minimum on each call and bill hold time during transfer attempts. English is available around the clock, while Spanish support has a shorter stated window.
Posh includes 24/7 availability on its pricing page, read October 5, 2026, and says there is no holiday or weekend surcharge in its cost guide, read October 7, 2026. At 100 calls, its cost is $630. Its FAQ guarantees Spanish during weekday hours and treats other times as availability dependent. The terms round each call up to a full minute, although a blog describes finer billing.
Ruby states "24/7 live answering (including after-hours, on weekends, and holidays)" on its pricing page, read October 5, 2026. At 100 calls the cost is $1,160. Its help article says there is no extra 24/7 charge, but support staff are unavailable during extended hours and maintenance can redirect calls to an after-hours solution (read October 7, 2026). Confirm that solution before a critical overnight campaign.
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists says live staff answer 24/7 and that "Calls at 2 pm and 2 am cost the same" in its holiday article, read October 7, 2026. At 100 calls, the plan cost is $915. The terms require cancellation before the subscription window closes; a dedicated Spanish line and other add-ons are charged per call. Ask whether a long overnight intake call fits its stated average-call limit.
Live or AI for overnight coverage?
An AI receptionist can answer at any hour, but the published AI and live plans bill different units and offer different handoff rules. At 100 three-minute calls, the live median across the price index is $406 and the AI median is $174. Those are plan costs, not a measure of caller outcomes. A buyer needing emergency judgment, caller reassurance or a warm transfer should inspect the human escalation path and its charge. A buyer who needs a message or routine scheduling should compare the task the AI actually completes. See live versus AI cost for the plan comparison.
What to check before forwarding night calls
- Define the night window. ReceptionHQ measures it in Phoenix time, not the caller's time zone. Ask whether the weekend and holidays use that same surcharge rule.
- Ask for the holiday calendar and fee. MAP's terms name a Holiday Fee without the amount or the covered days. Ask for both on the quote.
- Write the escalation script. For dispatch, specify who gets called, how many attempts are made, how long the agent waits, and what happens if no one answers. Hold and patch time can be billable.
- Test the language window. A service may answer English at all hours while Spanish is limited, routed differently or sold as an add-on.
- Decide who owns the number. If you advertise a vendor-assigned line, ask whether you can port it away on cancellation. AnswerAmerica and Specialty publish limits on assigned numbers.
- Check the first invoice. Ask whether setup, the last month, holiday charges, transfer fees or card fees are due before the first call. The table does not include them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best 24/7 answering service for a small business?
The choice depends on the overnight task. At 100 three-minute calls, AnswerAmerica costs $150 in prepaid message credits, while AnswerForce costs $389 for a live plan with published dispatch capability. The former has no published transfer service; the latter has a minimum contract term.
Do 24/7 answering services charge extra at night?
Some do. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus charges per call outside its Phoenix-time weekday window, including weekends and federal holidays (terms, read October 7, 2026). PATLive says overnight calls have no extra charge (FAQ, read October 7, 2026). The base plan still bills the minutes or calls used.
Are holidays included in a 24/7 answering plan?
Coverage and price are separate questions. MAP says it answers around the clock but its terms add a flat Holiday Fee whose amount is not published (read October 7, 2026). Specialty says it does not add a holiday charge in its registration FAQ (read October 7, 2026).
Can a 24/7 answering service transfer an emergency call?
Yes, if the chosen plan includes transfer or dispatch and your script tells the agent whom to contact. AnswerForce says agents can call on-call technicians to dispatch them (read October 7, 2026). AnswerAmerica's published service is message taking, so its low cost should not be read as a dispatch quote.
Is Spanish answering available overnight?
Availability differs by vendor. MAP says bilingual agents answer at night, while PATLive publishes a shorter Spanish window and Posh guarantees bilingual answering on weekday hours (all read October 7, 2026). Ask how a Spanish caller is handled outside a published language window.
How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
