- It bills by the second, but billable time includes the operator's notes after the caller hangs up, and transfers carry their own per-minute charge.

- Its pricing FAQ, sign-up FAQ, help center and terms give four different cancellation instructions. The terms require notice before the next billing date and no partial-month refund.
- You cannot take the number with you: its terms say you are "not permitted to port-away the telephone number associated with your account."

Specialty Answering Service pricing plans
Prices checked against Specialty Answering Service's own pricing page on October 12, 2026.
| Plan | Price and allowance | Past the allowance | The math |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | $44/month plus $1.54 a minute | $1.54 a minute | $44 base + $1.54/min used |
| 100 Minute | $159/month for 100 minutes | $1.44 a minute | $159 ÷ 100 min = $1.59/min |
| 220 Minute | $269/month for 220 minutes | $1.44 a minute | $269 ÷ 220 min = $1.22/min |
| 500 Minute | $649/month for 500 minutes | $1.34 a minute | $649 ÷ 500 min = $1.30/min |
| 1,000 Minute | $1,199/month for 1,000 minutes | $1.29 a minute | $1,199 ÷ 1,000 min = $1.20/min |
| 2,500 Minute | $2,929/month for 2,500 minutes | $1.19 a minute | $2,929 ÷ 2,500 min = $1.17/min |
| 5,000 Minute | $5,649/month for 5,000 minutes | $1.19 a minute | $5,649 ÷ 5,000 min = $1.13/min |

Source: specialtyansweringservice.net/pricing, read Oct 12, 2026. On taxes, the help center says: "If you are not located in Pennsylvania, you will not see any taxes on your invoice." (article 115, read October 7, 2026)
Per call. SAS also prices a per-call level, Essentials, on its rate comparison page (read October 9, 2026). That page says "Only call lengths of less than or equal to two minutes are eligible to receive a pay per call pricing estimate," so at three-minute calls we price SAS per minute.
Joy AI, SAS's AI receptionist, bills less per minute: "every 1 minute Joy handles uses only 0.8 plan minutes" (sasjoy.com/pricing, read October 7, 2026).
What Specialty Answering Service costs at 50, 100 and 200 calls a month
| Calls a month | Monthly cost | Per call | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | $231 | $4.62 a call | $2,772 |
| 100 | $384.20 | $3.84 a call | $4,610 |
| 200 | $783 | $3.92 a call | $9,396 |
Our arithmetic: Specialty Answering Service's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.
Plan by plan:
- 50 calls (150 minutes): $159/month for 100 minutes, plus $1.44 a minute for the other 50 minutes: $231.
- 100 calls (300 minutes): $269/month for 220 minutes, plus $1.44 a minute for the other 80 minutes: $384.20.
- 200 calls (600 minutes): $649/month for 500 minutes, plus $1.34 a minute for the other 100 minutes: $783.
SAS's help center agrees for 300 minutes: its 220 Minute plan "Works best for: usage up to 483 minutes per month" (article 102, read October 7, 2026). Overage can be billed mid-month: "If you exceed 2x over your plan's cost effective threshold, you will be charged for those overage minutes due on receipt." (article 470, read October 7, 2026) Try other volumes in the answering service cost calculator.
How Specialty Answering Service counts a minute
- Billing unit: Per minute or per call
- Rounding: 1 second
- Billed beyond talk time: Hold time and after-call documentation; patching +$0.10/min; advanced IVR +$0.15/min; voicemail $0.15/min
- Spam and short calls: Robocalls, faxes and dead air capped at 30 billable seconds; live telemarketers billed
SAS's terms say: "So if a call lasts six (6) seconds, then your Service Plan will be charged six (6) seconds." (specialtyansweringservice.net/terms, read October 7, 2026) The same paragraph widens what a second covers: "Billable time will also include time needed for operators or other staff to provide services required by any particular call."
In the help center's example, the caller talks for 2 minutes, the agent adds notes, and "The billable duration is 2 minutes 30 seconds" (article 274, read October 7, 2026). The rate comparison page adds that per-minute billing "Includes hold time during the call" (read October 9, 2026). Warm and cold transfers have a separate per-minute charge (article 510, read October 7, 2026).
Automated calls, fax machines and dead air are "limited to 30 seconds of billable time" (article 274). Live telemarketers are not, and SAS's blog says "you're inevitably going to pay for some sort of inbound telemarketing" (SAS blog, read October 7, 2026). Compare which answering services charge for spam calls.
Fees, contract and trial
- Setup fee: $0, but $60 an hour for programming changes over 5 minutes
- Contract: Three cancellation rules on the site and a fourth in the terms; no proration
- Trial: 14 days or 200 minutes
Script changes cost extra after the first 5 minutes (article 112, read October 7, 2026). Spanish needs its own paid line, which after the trial "is considered a sub account" (sign-up page, read October 7, 2026). See bilingual answering service pricing. Nights and holidays carry no surcharge: "We do not charge any extra or hidden fees to answer your calls over a holiday, weekend, or after hours." (sign-up page)
Four cancellation statements
| Page | What it says | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing page FAQ | "You can cancel whenever you want." Then: "you will be billed for the current month and usage from the previous month" | specialtyansweringservice.net/pricing, October 5, 2026 |
| Sign-up page FAQ | "we do ask for a 30 day cancellation notice if you would like to cancel service." | specialtyansweringservice.net/register, October 7, 2026 |
| Help center | "Cancellations can only be processed within the current month. In addition, cancellation notice must be submitted in writing" | article 272, October 7, 2026 |
| Termsthe contract | "You must cancel your subscription before the next Billing Cycle Date." | specialtyansweringservice.net/terms, October 7, 2026 |
The terms are the contract: notice by support ticket or email, and "Your termination request will be fulfilled within three (3) business days." The sign-up page adds: "we do charge base rates one month in advance". Other services' terms are in month-to-month answering services.
The phone number stays with SAS
The terms say: "If you terminate services, you are not permitted to port-away the telephone number associated with your account." SAS also "may reassign your forwarding number at any time while you are still an active client" (article 121, read October 7, 2026).
The catch
- "No hidden fees" sits above a programming fee. The pricing headline is "Simple pricing. No hidden fees. Really!" (read October 5, 2026), yet script work past 5 minutes is billed hourly and "Programming charges are due the same day that updates are made" (article 112).
- The plan moves up on its own, and may not come back down. The pricing FAQ says "You are not locked into any plan." The terms say "you authorize us to increase or upgrade your Service Plan to a Service Plan that matches your usage". Downgrades are limited: "we are unable to decrease your plan if it is not cost-effective to your current usage" (article 275, read October 7, 2026).
- Cancelling mid-month buys nothing back. The terms: "Cancellation on the first day, or any day, of a monthly period shall be considered as Customer usage for that monthly period".
- "No credit card required", then a card is required. That is the sign-up page. The terms say "you are required to provide SAS with a valid form of payment", and after the trial "a credit card is required to be on file for the first 6 months" (sign-up page).
- The industry pages and the rate card disagree. The roofers and property management pages advertise a daily starting price that understates the current entry plan (both read October 7, 2026). The entry plan is $44/month (pay per use at $1.54/min), before any minutes, and 50 three-minute calls cost $231 a month.
Every vendor's fees are in answering service hidden fees.
Where Specialty Answering Service is a good buy
Low and middle volume with live transfers. At 50 and 100 three-minute calls, SAS costs $231 and $384.20, less than Answering Service Care, AnswerFirst and PATLive. It also costs less than Go Answer at 50 calls and MAP Communications at 100.
Short calls. With no per-call minimum, hang-ups and wrong numbers cost seconds, and robocalls stop at 30 billable seconds.
A trial with a stated cap: "Your Free Trial Plan ends after two weeks (14-days) or after you have utilized 200 minutes, whichever comes first." (terms)
Specialty Answering Service vs alternatives at 50, 100 and 200 calls
| Service | Billing unit | Rounding | 50 calls/mo | 100 calls/mo | 200 calls/mo | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Specialty Answering Service | Per minute or per call | 1 second | $231 | $384.20 | $783 | specialtyansweringservice.net/pricing, read Oct 12, 2026 |
| AnswerFirst | Per minute | 1 second | $270 to $322.50 | $510 to $615 | $990 to $1,200 | answerfirst.com/pricing, read Oct 12, 2026 |
| Answering Service Care | Per minute | Whole minute, rounded up | $264 | $409 | $774 | answeringservicecare.com/pricing, read Oct 12, 2026 |
| Go Answer | Per minute | 1 second | $262.50 | $345 | $700 | goanswer.io/pricing/live-receptionist, read Oct 12, 2026 |
| MAP Communications | Per minute | Whole minute, rounded up | $211.50 | $403 | $777 | mapcommunications.com/pricing, read Oct 12, 2026 |
| PATLive | Per minute | 6 seconds, with a 1-minute minimum per call | $293.50 | $479 | $938 | patlive.com/pricing, read Oct 12, 2026 |
Same arithmetic as above. AnswerFirst's per-minute rate falls with usage in bands it does not publish, so its costs are ranges.
SAS and Go Answer change places more than once as volume grows, so there is no single break-even. SAS costs less at 50 calls ($231 against $262.50) and Go Answer at 100 ($345 against $384.20). MAP Communications costs less than SAS at 50 calls and more at 100.
At 200 calls, Go Answer, Answering Service Care and MAP Communications cost less than SAS: $700, $774 and $777 against $783. SAS still costs less than PATLive and AnswerFirst there. Every service we price is in what an answering service costs.

How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
