Answering Service Bill Going Up? Audit and Options for 2026
Published . Updated . Prices checked October 12, 2026.

Key takeaways
- At 100 three-minute calls, the median live service costs $406 (prices checked October 12, 2026).
- Compare billed units with call records before treating a higher invoice as a rate increase; wrap-up, rounding and extras can change the total.
- Ask for the effective cancellation date before switching: Moneypenny requires a full calendar month of notice, and MAP requires written notice ahead of the next invoice.
- AnswerAmerica shows prepaid cash needed for messages with rollover, not a recurring monthly bill.
As of October 12, 2026, the median live answering service costs $406 for 100 three-minute calls, and published live prices run $150 to $1,160 (low end AnswerAmerica, prepaid message-taking only, no transfers; unused credits roll over). If your invoice rose, compare call records with billed units, then check the rate, fees and plan before deciding to switch.
Why does my answering service bill keep going up?
Prices checked against each vendor's own pricing page on October 12, 2026.
The first table prices live and hybrid answering; the second adds AI. Each row uses the same call volumes. Answering Legal and Nexa require a quote. Slang.ai lacks enough detail to price these volumes. The tables have 26 services with computable prices at 100 calls.

Our arithmetic: each monthly vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus published overage, at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows upfront cash for credits sufficient for the calls, not a monthly charge; unused credits roll over. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are excluded. How we price.
AI answering prices if you can change the call flow
An AI plan works only if its handling and escalation fit your calls. Sameday serves home services; Slang.ai serves restaurants. The live versus AI cost comparison examines their billing units.

Not computable: the vendor's published rate does not define enough usage or overage to price the call volume.
Audit an answering service invoice before switching
Read three consecutive invoices alongside call logs and your contract. For each cycle, record call count, talk time, billed time, allowance, overage, fees, credits and plan changes. Ask for call-level billable time if the invoice only shows totals.
Did the call volume or billed time change?
Divide billed minutes by answered calls for each cycle and compare that with talk time per call. Flag transfers, outbound attempts, live chat and after-call notes as separate activities. An increase in calls is not the same as an increase in minutes per call. Our calculator lets you enter the call length from your own invoice; the tables here use the same three-minute assumption for every vendor.
- AnswerConnect billing increment: Whole minute, rounded up
- AnswerConnect work beyond talk: Hold, transfers and patches, after-call work; chat and outbound calls use the same minutes
- Moneypenny billing increment: 30 seconds per call, rounded up after adding wrap-up and dispatch time
- Moneypenny work beyond talk: Wrap-up up to 180 seconds per call, transfer dial-out, every dispatch leg; queue time not billed
AnswerConnect says a call of 1 minute 25 seconds uses 2 minutes (AnswerConnect billing help, read October 7, 2026). Its minutes also include "any after-call work our receptionists complete to process your message" (same source). Moneypenny's terms add operator time, wrap-up and dispatching before rounding a call up to 30 seconds; its wrap-up cap is "180 seconds per call" (Moneypenny phone terms, read October 7, 2026). Match the billed duration to the contract's clock, not just the phone recording.
Did the plan or rate change?
Compare each plan label, allowance, base charge and overage rate with the previous invoice. For 100 three-minute calls, Go Answer costs $345 on its cheapest published plan for that volume; at 200 calls it costs $700. Those are different usage scenarios, so an invoice jump does not by itself show a rate increase. Ask the service to identify the effective date and notice for any changed rate.
Moneypenny's terms say it "may increase the charges for the Services on an annual basis" and will give 30 calendar days' written notice (Moneypenny phone terms, read October 7, 2026). Specialty Answering Service says its system may "upgrade the account for you" during the first six months when usage passes its threshold (Specialty registration FAQ, read October 7, 2026). Its terms also authorize it to increase or upgrade the plan to match usage (Specialty terms, read October 7, 2026). Check whether the higher tier persists after a spike.
Did new fees or unwanted calls appear?
Group charges outside the plan and overage by type. MAP Communications terms name a "Telecom Fee" per call and a "Holiday Fee" whose amount is not published (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026). Ruby terms say card payments "will incur a 3.0% surcharge" (Ruby terms, read October 7, 2026). Compare holiday dates and payment method with prior cycles. See hidden fees and spam-call billing.
AnswerAmerica's price page says "Wrong Numbers/Hoax Calls FREE", while its terms say "All calls will be charged one credit including hangups, wrong numbers and marketing calls" (both read October 9, 2026). The terms govern the prepaid credit audit. Its first purchase, later refills and remaining balance belong on a credit ledger, not in a monthly-plan comparison.
Which switching option fits the reason for the increase?
Usage climbed but service is working. Ask your vendor to price a plan at your new volume. Moneypenny says an upgrade brings prorated charges "plus one full billing cycle at the upgraded plan rate" (Moneypenny phone terms, read October 7, 2026). Check the effective date.
Short messages dominate. AnswerAmerica requires $150 upfront to cover 100 calls with credits that roll over. It takes messages, without transfers. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress costs $170 on a monthly plan at that volume and also limits handling to messages. Compare any remaining prepaid credits before treating either as monthly savings.
You need live transfers. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs $260 at 100 calls before transfer and after-hours charges. PATLive costs $479 at the same calls on the published plan math. Ask both how a failed transfer, a holiday and a long call appear on the invoice.
The problem is disputed billing. Request call-level records and the clause applied to each challenged line. Moneypenny's terms treat invoices as agreed unless it receives discrepancies within 7 days (Moneypenny phone terms, read October 7, 2026). Check your own deadline.
Check exit terms before moving the phone line
Price the overlap between providers. Record notice, minimum term, prepaid months, setup, unused credits and number ownership. Test the replacement before moving all calls. Keep the old service through the confirmed cutover.
- Moneypenny contract: Month-to-month; one full calendar month notice by phone
- MAP Communications contract: Month-to-month; written notice one month before the next invoice
- AnswerConnect contract: 90-day minimum, then written notice; a partial month is billed in full
- ReceptionHQ contract: Month-to-month; email 3 days before renewal
Moneypenny requires "one full calendar month advanced notice" and says a cancellation after the first day of a month incurs another full month (Moneypenny phone terms, read October 7, 2026). MAP asks for written notice "at least 1 month prior to your next invoice due date" (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026). AnswerConnect has a 90-day minimum term (AnswerConnect terms, read October 7, 2026). Those rules can make a switch cost more than the first replacement invoice.
For the number, Specialty Answering Service terms say "you are not permitted to port-away the telephone number" it provides (Specialty terms, read October 7, 2026). ReceptionHQ says it retains its assigned number when service ends (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026). Ask for written porting confirmation before cancelling if callers dial a vendor-assigned number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my answering service bill higher when call count did not change?
A stable call count can still produce more billable minutes if calls last longer or the vendor bills more after-call work, transfers or dispatch time. Compare call-level billed time, not just answered-call count. AnswerConnect includes after-call work in its minutes (billing help, read October 7, 2026).
Can I change plans instead of changing answering services?
Yes, ask the vendor to price a plan against your current billed minutes and to state when the change takes effect. Specialty Answering Service may upgrade a plan after a usage threshold during the first six months (registration FAQ, read October 7, 2026). Ask whether a downgrade has a waiting period after the volume falls.
Does a lower advertised price mean a lower next invoice?
No. Compare the new vendor's upfront payment, setup charges, usage units and overlap with the existing contract. AnswerAmerica's $150 at 100 calls is prepaid cash for credits that can roll over, not a monthly subscription invoice.
What should I request when I dispute an answering service invoice?
Request the itemized call record, billed duration, plan allowance, overage calculation, fee schedule and the contract version in force for that cycle. Identify each disputed charge and ask for a written correction or explanation. Follow the dispute deadline in your own contract; Moneypenny's published terms use 7 days from the billing date.
How do I avoid losing calls during a switch?
Confirm the replacement line answers test calls and that your published number can be forwarded or ported before cancelling the old service. Get the old provider's effective termination date in writing. If the old provider owns the assigned number, arrange a different number and update the places customers use it.
How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Clarified Alert Communications and Nexa trial summaries from "None" to "None found": the reviewed public pages do not offer trial terms, but do not establish that no private offer exists.
- Clarified LEX Reception trial wording from "None" to "None found": the reviewed vendor pages publish no trial offer, but do not establish that the company never offers one.
- Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
