Key takeaways

  • At 100 three-minute calls a month, live answering services cost $150 to $1,160; the lowest-priced monthly plan with transfers costs $260 (prices checked October 12, 2026).
  • ReceptionHQ caps details on its per-call plans and charges for transfers and nights or weekends. AnswerAmerica takes messages using prepaid credits; long intake calls fit a per-minute plan.
  • Per-minute live winners change by volume: AnswerFirst, PATLive, Specialty Answering Service, MAP Communications and Go Answer. AnswerAmerica sells prepaid message taking.
  • At 10 and 15 calls, ReceptionHQ's plan with transfers costs less than its message-only plan, because its smallest transfer tier is a 15-call new-customer offer.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. For AnswerAmerica, cost means upfront cash to buy enough credits, not a monthly charge; unused credits roll over. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

ReceptionHQ sells two per-call families on separate pages, so they are two rows: MessageExpress takes messages, and ReceptionistPlus also puts calls through (ReceptionHQ pricing). Answering Legal and Nexa publish no plan price; AnswerConnect and LEX Reception have published plans in this table. Alert Communications serves law firms only. AnswerConnect, LEX Reception and AnswerForce are one company (who owns which answering service). See answering service pricing for all costs and fees.

The cheapest live answering service at each call volume

AnswerAmerica sells prepaid credits that roll over; ReceptionHQ sells monthly plans. The other columns compare transfers and per-minute billing.

Same arithmetic as the first table, at 3-minute calls. The per-minute column compares live and hybrid services that bill by the minute, excluding law-only Alert Communications. AnswerAmerica figures are upfront prepaid cash purchases; unused credits roll over.

Three comparisons matter:

  • The message-only floor changes with volume. Among priced live and hybrid services, MessageExpress costs least at 20 and 40 calls: $49 and $78.85 as monthly costs. AnswerAmerica requires $50 upfront at 30 calls and $150 at 100 calls, below MessageExpress at those volumes; its unused credits roll over.
  • Below 20 calls, the plan with transfers costs less than the plan without. At 10 calls ReceptionistPlus costs $39 against $44.90 for MessageExpress, and at 15 calls $39 against $49. At 20 calls MessageExpress costs less again, $49 against $53.95.
  • With transfers, ReceptionistPlus costs less at every volume we priced. At 10 to 300 calls it costs less than every other live or hybrid service with a published price except the message-only options, MessageExpress and AnswerAmerica. At 100 calls it costs $260, $85 a month less than Go Answer.

Message-only plans vs plans that transfer calls

A message-only plan answers in your business name, takes the caller's details and sends them to you. Nobody is put through. ReceptionHQ's FAQ says of MessageExpress: "call transfers are not available on this service." (receptionhq.com/faqs, read October 7, 2026)

If a caller has to reach you live, the service has to transfer, and every service prices that differently. The plan price in the tables above leaves it out. This is what each low-cost service says a transfer adds:

  • ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus: a flat fee per transfer. Its terms list "Call transfer to landline or cell phone $0.30 per call for ReceptionistPlus plans" and "Unsuccessful transfer attempts $0.15 per unsuccessful attempt" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026).
  • Specialty Answering Service: a second meter on the patched leg. "Warm and Cold Patches are billed at $0.10/minute, starting from when the agent patches the call to when the recipient disconnects the call." (SAS help center, read October 7, 2026)
  • AnswerFirst: a second rate it does not publish. "we bill at our virtual services per-minute rate during patched calls" (answerfirst.com, read October 7, 2026).
  • PATLive: the wait while it tries you is billed. "If a receptionist places a caller on hold to look something up, attempt a transfer ... this time will be included in the billable minute." (patlive.com/terms-of-use, read October 7, 2026)
  • MAP Communications: billed until the transfer completes, "ending when a receptionist transfers the call through to someone, or to voicemail" (mapcommunications.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
  • Go Answer: two documents, two answers. Its FAQ says "Call patching is free of charge" (goanswer.io/faq, read October 7, 2026), while its terms list "call patching" among "Supplemental Services" billed at its rate schedule (goanswer.io/terms-conditions, read October 7, 2026). The terms are the contract.
  • Moneypenny: "the time while the operator is dialing outbound is also considered billable operator time" (Moneypenny phone answering terms, read October 7, 2026).
  • Answering Service Care: "Call Transfers" are listed on every plan card (answeringservicecare.com/pricing, read October 9, 2026), and the clock runs "from cradle to grave" (answeringservicecare.com terms, read October 9, 2026), so a transfer adds minutes at the plan rate.

9 of 14 live and hybrid services that say what their billable time includes name transfer or patch time as billable: Abby Connect, AnswerConnect, AnswerFirst, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Moneypenny (US), Nexa, PATLive and Specialty Answering Service (vendor terms, read October 7 to 9, 2026).

Answering service pricing for 10 to 50 calls a month

At low volume the entry price is a base fee, not the bill. The per-minute or per-call rate on top of it decides the order. AnswerAmerica has no monthly fee, but requires a prepaid purchase, so it is shown separately above:

ServiceEntry plan10 calls/mo20 calls/mo30 calls/mo
AnswerFirst$30/month (pay per use at $1.60 to $1.95/min)$78 to $88.50$126 to $147$174 to $205.50
Answering Service Care$40/month (pay per use at $1.75/min)$92.50$145$179
MAP Communications$49/month (pay per use at $1.37/min)$90.10$131.20$172.30
PATLive$49/month (pay per use at $2.99/min)$99$121.90$189
Posh$65/month (pay per use at $2.30/min)$130$152$215
Specialty Answering Service$44/month (pay per use at $1.54/min)$90.20$136.40$159
ReceptionHQ MessageExpressmessages only$25/month (pay per use at $1.99/call)$44.90$49$58.95
ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus$35/month (pay per use at $2.99/call)$39$53.95$83.85

Each service's cheapest published plan for that volume, at 3-minute calls. At some volumes that is a bundle rather than the pay-as-you-go plan.

A lower base fee does not mean a lower bill. Answering Service Care starts at $40/month (pay per use at $1.75/min) and MAP Communications at $49/month (pay per use at $1.37/min), yet at 10 calls MAP costs less: $90.10 against $92.50.

Short calls cost more per minute than the arithmetic shows at any service that rounds up. At low volume, where every call is a large share of the bill, the rounding rule matters most:

  • MAP Communications: Whole minute, rounded up
  • Answering Service Care: Whole minute, rounded up
  • PATLive: 6 seconds, with a 1-minute minimum per call
  • AnswerFirst: 1 second
  • Specialty Answering Service: 1 second

Answering Service Care's terms say usage "is calculated in whole minutes with any partial minute rounded up to the next whole minute" and starts at "the inception of a call in our systems" (answeringservicecare.com terms, read October 9, 2026).

What a low-cost plan costs at your volume

30 three-minute calls are 90 minutes. Specialty Answering Service charges $159/month for 100 minutes on its smallest bundle, which covers them, so 30 calls cost $159, or $5.30 a call.

The same 30 calls on ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus: its smallest tier is $39/month for 15 calls (new customer offer, 3 details captured), then $2.99 a call for each of the other 15 calls, so 30 calls cost $83.85 before transfer fees. At 50 calls its next tier, $135/month for 50 calls, takes over.

Your calls may run longer or shorter than three minutes. The answering service cost calculator reprices every plan at your call length, and per-minute vs flat-rate pricing shows where bundles start to cost less than paying by the minute.

What the low-priced plans leave out

Per-call plans cap the call

A per-call price holds only while calls stay short and simple. ReceptionHQ's per-call plans capture "Up to 5 details" on ReceptionistPlus (receptionhq.com pay-per-call page, read October 7, 2026), and its terms let it move an account to a per-minute plan or end it if "inbound call durations are in any way excessive or unreasonable" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026). Intake calls that run long belong on a per-minute plan, where the cheapest options are in the per-minute column above.

The smallest ReceptionistPlus tier is a promotion. ReceptionHQ labels it a "New Customer Offer" (receptionhq.com ReceptionistPlus 15, read October 7, 2026), and that tier captures "Up to 3 details" a call (receptionhq.com pay-per-call page, read October 7, 2026). If it ends, the next tier is $80/month for 25 calls.

Nights and weekends

ReceptionHQ charges extra outside its core hours. Calls "outside of 5am to 7pm Monday to Friday local time in Phoenix, Arizona" carry a surcharge "of $0.30 per call for ReceptionistPlus subscriptions" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026). That window covers all of Saturday and Sunday. A business whose calls come mostly after hours pays that on top of the per-call price.

Spam, robocalls and short calls

5 of 14 live and hybrid services that publish a spam rule bill spam calls: AnswerAmerica, AnswerFirst, Nexa, PATLive and Specialty Answering Service (vendor terms, read October 5 to 9, 2026). At the low-cost services, AnswerAmerica is included in the count and its terms charge a credit for every call despite its price page saying wrong numbers and hoax calls are free:

  • AnswerAmerica: Terms charge one credit for every call, including hangups, wrong numbers and marketing calls; price page says they are free
  • AnswerFirst: Billed ("The answer is YES"); numbers cannot be blocked
  • Answering Service Care: Robocalls billed unless you add the $12.95/month spam blocker
  • MAP Communications: No exclusion; MAP says spam is "not something we have control over"
  • ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus: Calls under 5 seconds free; telemarketing free only if ReceptionHQ identifies it; misdials billed
  • Specialty Answering Service: Robocalls, faxes and dead air capped at 30 billable seconds; live telemarketers billed

Answering Service Care sells the fix separately: "you can add on spam blocker for only $12.95 monthly" (answeringservicecare.com spam blocker, read October 9, 2026). ReceptionHQ frees telemarketing calls only when it spots them, and "takes no responsibility for the accurate identification of such calls" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026). More in which answering services charge for spam calls.

Setup fees and changes

  • AnswerFirst: Charged on every account, amount not published
  • Answering Service Care: $50, plus an annual maintenance fee, amount not published
  • Specialty Answering Service: $0, but $60 an hour for programming changes over 5 minutes
  • ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus: None

AnswerFirst's pricing page says "A one-time charge* may apply for businesses with complex needs" (answerfirst.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026), while its terms say "SP charges a one-time setup fee for each Account" (answerfirst.com terms, read October 7, 2026). On a 10-call month, an unpublished setup fee can be larger than the usage. The full list is in answering service hidden fees.

The advertised price and the plan card

ReceptionHQ's pricing page says: "Unlike most competitors who charge $100-$350 for entry-level service, ReceptionHQ offers professional US-based call answering from just $25/month." (receptionhq.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026) That price is the message-only plan, $25/month (pay per use at $1.99/call). Its plan that transfers starts at $35/month (pay per use at $2.99/call).

Answering Service Care's pricing page text says plans start "as low as $40 a month for our Starter Plan plus $1.65 per additional minute" (answeringservicecare.com/pricing, read October 9, 2026). The plan card on the same page charges $1.75 a minute, the rate used here.

Is an AI answering service cheaper?

At 50 three-minute calls, AI answering services cost $50 to $199, and at 100 calls $75 to $270. At 100 calls the median live service costs 2.3 times the median AI one. Software answers those calls, not a receptionist. The side-by-side is in live vs AI answering service cost.

Which low-cost answering service fits which situation

Lowest monthly plan cost with call transfers: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus

At 10, 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls, ReceptionistPlus costs $39, $135, $260 and $505, less than every other live or hybrid service with a published price except the two message-only options, ReceptionHQ MessageExpress and AnswerAmerica. It may not fit long calls: it captures up to 5 details, bills each transfer, and adds a per-call charge outside 5am to 7pm Phoenix time on weekdays. ReceptionHQ says "overnight calls are handled by our equally skilled, English-speaking team in Australia" (receptionhq.com/faqs, read October 7, 2026).

Lowest per-minute cost at 10 calls: AnswerFirst

At 10 three-minute calls, AnswerFirst costs $78 to $88.50, less than every other per-minute live or hybrid service with a published price, excluding the law-only Alert Communications. Its cost is a range because its rate is "From $1.60 - $1.95 Per Minute (Based On Your Usage)" in bands it does not publish (answerfirst.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026). At 15 calls PATLive costs less, $99 against $102 to $117.75. AnswerFirst bills spam calls and charges a setup fee on every account.

Lowest per-minute cost at 15 to 20 calls: PATLive

At 15 and 20 three-minute calls, PATLive costs $99 and $121.90, less than every other per-minute live or hybrid service with a published price, excluding the law-only Alert Communications. At 30 calls Specialty Answering Service costs less, $159 against $189. PATLive bills a full minute for any answered call, and its pricing page says "Prices don't include taxes and fees." (patlive.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026)

Lowest per-minute cost at about 30 calls: Specialty Answering Service

At 30 three-minute calls, Specialty Answering Service costs $159, less than every other per-minute live or hybrid service with a published price, excluding the law-only Alert Communications. At 40 calls MAP Communications costs less, $179 against $187.80. Specialty bills patched calls on a second meter and states its cancellation notice three ways.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest answering service with a live person answering calls?

At 100 three-minute calls a month, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs $260 with call transfers, less than every other live or hybrid service with a published price except the message-only options: ReceptionHQ MessageExpress costs $170 as a monthly plan, and AnswerAmerica requires $150 of prepaid credit that rolls over (prices checked October 12, 2026). Among live and hybrid services that bill by the minute, Go Answer costs least at 100 calls, $345, excluding the law-only Alert Communications.

Do live answering services sell pay-as-you-go plans with a small monthly fee?

Yes. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress, which takes messages only, starts at $25/month (pay per use at $1.99/call), and its ReceptionistPlus plans, which transfer calls, start at $35/month (pay per use at $2.99/call). AnswerFirst starts at $30/month (pay per use at $1.60 to $1.95/min) and MAP Communications at $49/month (pay per use at $1.37/min). The base fee is not the bill: at 10 three-minute calls, MAP costs $90.10.

Is PATLive cheaper than Ruby or Smith.ai?

Yes, at 100 three-minute calls a month: PATLive costs $479, Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists $915 and Ruby $1,160. AnswerConnect also publishes a plan price. Smith.ai bills per call, so long calls do not raise its bill the way they raise PATLive's.

Do cheap answering services charge for call transfers?

Several do, each in its own way. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus charges a flat fee per transferred call, Specialty Answering Service bills the patched leg per minute, and PATLive bills the hold time while a receptionist tries to reach you. Go Answer's FAQ calls patching free while its terms list it as a billed supplemental service.

Do cheap answering services charge for spam calls?

5 of 14 live and hybrid services that publish a spam rule bill spam calls: AnswerAmerica, AnswerFirst, Nexa, PATLive and Specialty Answering Service (vendor terms, read October 5 to 9, 2026). Answering Service Care bills robocalls unless you add its paid spam blocker.

How these prices were read

Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices

  • Clarified Alert Communications and Nexa trial summaries from "None" to "None found": the reviewed public pages do not offer trial terms, but do not establish that no private offer exists.
  • Clarified LEX Reception trial wording from "None" to "None found": the reviewed vendor pages publish no trial offer, but do not establish that the company never offers one.
  • Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
  • AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
  • Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
  • Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
  • Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
  • Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
  • Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
  • First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
