Key takeaways

- Where the number lands matters too: Go Answer's terms keep even numbers you transfer in, while Abby Connect's say a number you port in stays yours.
- AnswerConnect, AnswerForce and LEX Reception share one owner, AnywhereWorks, Inc.; their US contract terms differ.

Our arithmetic: for priced rows, each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.
At 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls, five services in the table cost less than PATLive: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus, Go Answer, MAP Communications, Specialty Answering Service and Answering Service Care. Of the services with a published price, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs least at all three volumes, before its transfer fee. Among the per-minute services, MAP Communications costs least at 50 calls and Go Answer at 100 and 200.
Same company, different terms
Shared owners among the alternatives:
- AnswerConnect, AnswerForce and LEX Reception: each terms page names the same contracting company: "AnywhereWorks, Inc. dba AnswerConnect" (answerconnect.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026), "AnywhereWorks, Inc. dba AnswerForce" (answerforce.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026) and "AnywhereWorks, Inc. dba LEX Reception" (lexreception.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026). All three set whole-minute rounding. AnswerConnect and AnswerForce set a 90-day US minimum; LEX Reception's US terms do not.
- Nexa and Alert Communications: Nexa owns Alert, a law-firm service whose terms match Nexa's.
- VoiceNation and Moneypenny: voicenation.com redirects to Moneypenny.
AnswerForce publishes its plans on an unlisted page. At 100 three-minute calls it costs $389, less than PATLive's $479. At 50 calls the order flips: AnswerForce $349, PATLive $293.50. Its terms set "a minimum period of 90 calendar days" (answerforce.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026). See who owns which answering service.
What each alternative does better and worse than PATLive
ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
Better: at 100 three-minute calls PATLive costs $219 a month more than ReceptionistPlus. One price per call, so a four-minute call costs the same as a two-minute one.
Worse: transfers cost extra: "Call transfer to landline or cell phone $0.30 per call for ReceptionistPlus plans" (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026). "Extended call durations will require a Plus Pack" (same terms), and "overnight calls are handled by our equally skilled, English-speaking team in Australia" (receptionhq.com/faqs, read October 7, 2026). ReceptionHQ MessageExpress, its message-only plan, costs $170 at 100 calls.
Go Answer
Better: at 100 calls PATLive costs $134 a month more, or $1,608 a year. Go Answer bills by the second with no per-call minimum.
Worse: the seconds include "summary and disconnection minutes" (goanswer.io/faq, read October 7, 2026), which PATLive does not bill.
MAP Communications
Better: at 50 calls PATLive costs $82 a month more than MAP Communications.
Worse: whole-minute rounding, plus "any time a receptionist spends completing any information on your call after the caller has hung up" with no published cap, and a "$.024 per call" Telecom Fee (mapcommunications.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
Specialty Answering Service
Better: at 100 calls PATLive costs $95 a month more. Specialty Answering Service bills by the second, and robocalls are capped: "The following call types are limited to 30 seconds of billable time" (SAS help, article 274, read October 7, 2026).
Worse: "If you terminate services, you are not permitted to port-away the telephone number associated with your account." (specialtyansweringservice.net/terms, read October 7, 2026) "Programming fees are billed at a rate of $60 per hour" for changes over 5 minutes (SAS help, article 112, read October 7, 2026).
Answering Service Care
Better: at 200 calls PATLive costs $164 a month more than Answering Service Care.
Worse: usage runs "from the inception of a call in our systems through its completion and any post-call related work", rounded to whole minutes, and cancelling takes written notice "at least one (1) full billing period in advance" (answeringservicecare.com/terms-and-conditions, read October 9, 2026).
AnswerFirst
Better: one-second billing and a 30-day guarantee. At 50 calls AnswerFirst costs $270 to $322.50, a range that straddles PATLive's $293.50.
Worse: at 100 calls it costs $510 to $615, more than PATLive's $479. Spam is billed: "Am I billed for spam, robo calls and solicitation calls? The answer is YES." (support.answerfirst.com, read October 7, 2026)
Moneypenny
Better: calls round to 30 seconds, where PATLive bills a full first minute on every call, and queue time is not billed.
Worse: at 100 calls Moneypenny costs $134 a month more than PATLive. Its terms add wrap-up "up to 180 seconds per call" before rounding, and "if Services are canceled after the 1st calendar day of the month, the Customer will be responsible for payment of another full month" (Moneypenny US phone terms, read October 7, 2026).
Posh
Better: a 7-day trial with no card, and no setup fee.
Worse: at 100 calls Posh costs $151 a month more. Its terms round "up to the next 60-second increment" (posh.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
Ruby
Better: you can take your number with you: port-away is allowed "provided your account is in good standing" (ruby.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
Worse: at 100 calls Ruby costs 2.4 times what PATLive does, $681 a month more. Calls are "rounded up to the next 60-second mark" (same terms).
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists
Better: per-call pricing, and spam and misdials are not counted when caller ID passes.
Worse: at 100 calls it costs $436 a month more than PATLive. "Cancellation must be made at least thirty (30) days prior to the end of the current subscription cycle." (smith.ai/receptionists/terms, read October 7, 2026)
Abby Connect
Better: a number you bring stays yours: "Any telephone number ported to Abby Connect by you shall remain your property." (abby.com terms, read October 7, 2026)
Worse: at 100 calls Abby costs $419 a month more than PATLive, and its billed time "includes ring time, talk time, and transfer time" (same terms).
AnswerConnect
Better: at 100 and 200 three-minute calls, AnswerConnect costs $395 and $887.50, below PATLive's $479 and $938. It also exempts the first 30 calls under 30 seconds each month (answerconnect.com help center, read October 7, 2026).
Worse: at 50 three-minute calls PATLive costs $293.50, less than AnswerConnect's $350. AnswerConnect lists prices on its direct plans page, but the main site's price route asks for contact details. Its terms set "a minimum period of 90 calendar days" (answerconnect.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026).
Nexa
Better: "a combination of people and AI-powered solutions" on one account (nexa.com FAQ, read October 7, 2026).
Worse: Nexa is quote only, and its terms allow "System time ... billed as a percentage of work and/or talk time" plus a "Holiday-related fee" on eight named holidays (nexa.com terms, read October 7, 2026).
Where PATLive is still the better buy
Against the brands it is shopped with. At 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls PATLive costs less than Ruby, Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Abby Connect, Posh and Moneypenny. At 100 and 200 calls it also costs less than AnswerFirst's whole range. More in Ruby vs Smith.ai vs PATLive and PATLive vs AnswerConnect.
At low volume against Go Answer. PATLive costs less than Go Answer until about 28 calls a month: $156.25 against $175 at 25 calls.
When work happens after the call. PATLive's terms stop the meter when the receptionist drops: "You are not billed for anytime a call sits in queue waiting for a receptionist, or for any time after a receptionist is disconnected." (patlive.com/terms-of-use, read October 7, 2026) 10 of 12 live answering services that publish what they bill name after-call work as billable: AnswerConnect, AnswerFirst, AnswerForce, Answering Service Care, Go Answer, MAP Communications, Moneypenny (US), Posh, Ruby and Specialty Answering Service (vendor terms, read October 7 to 9, 2026). Our arithmetic counts three minutes a call for all, so long write-ups narrow the real gap to PATLive.
When you may want to leave fast. PATLive's terms say "You may terminate Your Services at any time by calling customer service at 1-850-608-8012", and porting is free: "We do not charge any fees to port your number in to or out of PATLive." (patlive.com/faqs, read October 7, 2026) Nights, weekends and holidays cost nothing extra: "Absolutely not." (same FAQ)

Which alternative fits which situation
Best for the lowest bill with transfersReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
$260 at 100 three-minute calls, the least of the services in the table with a published price at 50, 100 and 200 calls. It may not fit if most calls are transferred, run long or come in overnight.
Best per-minute plan at 100 to 200 calls: Go Answer
$345 at 100 calls and $700 at 200, the least of the eleven priced per-minute services in the table. It may not fit if you want to keep the number it gives you: numbers "always remain the property of Go Answer" (goanswer.io/terms-conditions, read October 7, 2026).
Best per-minute plan near 50 calls: MAP Communications
$211.50 at 50 calls, the least of the per-minute services in the table at that volume. At 100 calls Go Answer takes the lead, $345 against MAP's $403. It may not fit if your receptionists write long messages: MAP's after-call time has no cap.
Best for short calls and robocallsSpecialty Answering Service
$384.20 at 100 calls, less than PATLive at 50, 100 and 200 calls, with per-second billing where PATLive bills a full first minute. It may not fit if you advertise the number it assigns: you cannot port it away.

| Abby Connect | "Any telephone number ported to Abby Connect by you shall remain your property." | abby.com terms, read Oct 7, 2026 |

| Ruby | Port-away allowed "provided your account is in good standing"; numbers "not ported back within three months after termination" may be reassigned | ruby.com/terms, read Oct 7, 2026 |
| Specialty Answering Service | "you are not permitted to port-away the telephone number associated with your account" | specialtyansweringservice.net/terms, read Oct 7, 2026 |
| AnswerConnect, Answering Service Care, Moneypenny, Smith.ai | No ownership clause in the pages we read | Vendor files, read Oct 7 to 9, 2026 |
AnswerFirst's fee is "$200" (KB0010299). Go Answer's clause covers numbers you bring, so porting your PATLive number into Go Answer hands it over. With Go Answer, MAP, Posh, Nexa or Specialty Answering Service, keep the number at a phone carrier you control and forward it.
How to switch from PATLive without losing calls or your number
- Port before you cancel. PATLive's pricing FAQ calls the number one "you own it and can port it out at any time" (patlive.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026). Its terms add: "Any phone numbers remaining on the Account become property of PATLive and may not be available for porting or reuse once a cancellation is effective." (patlive.com/terms-of-use, read October 7, 2026)
- Let the new carrier start the port. "Initiate the porting request with your new service provider." Then "Reach out to PATLive via email or phone and authorize the number port, so that when the new carrier requests your number port there is no delay." PATLive "will wish to know if you want to close the account upon port completion": say yes, so the account closes only once the number has moved (help.patlive.com/porting-your-number, read October 7, 2026).
- Copy your scripts first. After a cancellation PATLive holds "system information, phone numbers, and scripts for up to 30 days", but "The 30-Day Guarantee does not apply if you decide to port your phone number out of PATLive's service." (help.patlive.com, read October 7, 2026)
- Time the cancellation. No notice is needed, but the plan fee is paid in advance. One help article says "It's best to cancel at or around the end of your billing cycle" because PATLive does not "automatically refund or pro-rate" it (help.patlive.com, read October 7, 2026); the Flex article says "Final bills are automatically prorated" (help.patlive.com, read October 7, 2026). Ask which applies to you.
- Overlap for a few days. Send after-hours calls to the new service first, then move the main line.
- Check the final invoice within 30 days. PATLive's terms give you 30 days from the statement date to dispute a charge by email, or you "waive all rights to bring any claim regarding the particular charge" (patlive.com/terms-of-use, read October 7, 2026).
Contract terms side by side are in month-to-month answering services, and every service at the same volumes in answering service pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is cheaper than PATLive?
At 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls a month, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus, Go Answer, MAP Communications, Specialty Answering Service and Answering Service Care each cost less than PATLive. Can I keep my phone number if I leave PATLive?

No. PATLive is month-to-month and its terms let you cancel at any time by phone or online, with no early termination fee published. Its help articles disagree on whether the prepaid month is prorated when you leave.
Are AnswerConnect, AnswerForce and LEX Reception the same company?
Yes. Each one's terms name AnywhereWorks, Inc. as the contracting company, and all three round calls up to the whole minute.
Is an AI answering service an alternative to PATLive?
For the bill, yes. At 100 three-minute calls, the AI answering services we price cost $75 to $270 a month, against $479 for PATLive. PATLive says its receptionists are "fully human (no AI)".
How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Clarified Alert Communications and Nexa trial summaries from "None" to "None found": the reviewed public pages do not offer trial terms, but do not establish that no private offer exists.
- Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
