As of October 12, 2026, published live answering plans and prepaid packages cost $150 to $1,160 (low end AnswerAmerica, prepaid message-taking only, no transfers; unused credits roll over) for 100 three-minute calls a month; the median is $406. A person answers, but may take a message, transfer the caller or complete an intake. Those jobs have different billing rules.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

The table covers every live-category provider in our price index, including Answering Legal, whose plan price is quote only, and Alert Communications, whose published plans serve law firms. AnswerAmerica is prepaid: its cost cells show the package purchase needed for that volume, with unused credits carried forward. That is an upfront cash requirement, not a recurring monthly subscription. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress takes messages without transfers. ReceptionistPlus transfers calls but charges for each transfer, and after-hours calls carry another charge.

What does live answering actually include?

The useful question is what the human does after picking up. A message service records details and sends them to you. A receptionist plan may also transfer the caller, book an appointment or follow a longer intake script. Check the exact plan before comparing prices. A message row cannot be treated as a substitute for a transfer row merely because both say live answering.

Message-taking. AnswerAmerica sells prepaid call credits. Its package page says unused credits roll over, while its price page lists SMS and email message delivery without a separate charge (read October 9, 2026). ReceptionHQ MessageExpress sells monthly call allowances; its message-taking page describes message capture (read October 7, 2026). Neither row includes live call transfers.

Transfers. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus lists call transfers, but its terms charge separately for each transfer and for an unsuccessful attempt (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026). The table excludes those fees. If the receptionist transfers every call, the real bill rises with each successful or failed attempt.

Longer work. LEX Reception says "Detailed legal intake takes time" (LEX FAQ, read October 7, 2026). It bills whole minutes rounded up per call, so a longer screening call uses more allowance. Smith.ai prices live reception by the call but says extended intake must average 120 seconds or less (Smith.ai reasonable use policy, read October 7, 2026). A flat per-call price therefore does not mean unlimited intake time.

Does a live answering service use AI?

The live category tracks a human answering product, but vendor terms still matter. AnswerFirst's FAQ says "No bots or automated systems." Its terms also say AI may assist employees with "answering communications, routing calls, preparing message summaries" (AnswerFirst FAQ and terms, read October 7, 2026). Alert Communications sells legal live intake, yet its terms permit "conversational artificial intelligence agents" unless the client opts out "by providing written notice" (Alert terms, read October 7, 2026). A buyer requiring a person to speak first should get that handling rule in the service plan. Ask also whether AI-generated notes are reviewed before delivery.

For a comparison of plans where software speaks to the caller, see AI answering services and live vs AI answering cost. The small business comparison covers the broader choice of service, while this page isolates the human answering price.

How do human answering plans bill?

Per call. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus's $260/month for 100 calls includes a call allowance. Its terms can move accounts with long calls to a per-minute plan, so the flat unit has a usage condition (ReceptionHQ terms, read October 7, 2026).

Per minute. Go Answer's $345/month for 300 minutes has an allowance followed by $1.50 a minute. PATLive's $479/month for 300 minutes has a different overage rate, $1.89 a minute. At 100 three-minute calls, Go Answer costs $345 and PATLive $479. Go Answer costs less at that volume, but their billed minutes need not match because their counting rules differ.

Pay as you go. AnswerFirst charges $30/month plus $1.60 to $1.95 a minute. Its rate varies within a published band; the site does not publish the usage thresholds for each end. Its 100-call cost is therefore $510 to $615, a range rather than a single quote.

100 three-minute calls use 300 talk minutes before vendor-specific additions. Go Answer's $345/month for 300 minutes covers those talk minutes for $345 in our model. Its FAQ says it also charges for "summary and disconnection minutes" (Go Answer FAQ, read October 7, 2026). The plan can run into overage if those minutes accrue. Run your own call length through the answering service cost calculator.

Billed minutes divided by calls, from your last three invoices. Rounding, time billed after the call, spam, taxes, fees and setup are not included.

The catch: what can change a human answering bill

Rounding and time after the caller hangs up

  • AnswerConnect: Whole minute, rounded up
  • PATLive: 6 seconds, with a 1-minute minimum per call
  • Go Answer: 1 second

AnswerConnect's terms say "any partial minutes will be rounded up to the nearest whole minute" (AnswerConnect terms, read October 7, 2026). Its help center adds "any after-call work our receptionists complete to process your message" to the bill (billing help, read October 7, 2026). PATLive bills in six-second steps with a one-minute minimum: "All receptionist minutes are billed in six-second increments, with a one-minute minimum" (PATLive terms, read October 7, 2026). Go Answer bills by the second, but summary and disconnection time count. The same conversation length can consume different allowances.

Moneypenny adds operator wrap-up of up to "180 seconds per call" before rounding "up to the nearest 30-second increment" (Moneypenny phone terms, read October 7, 2026). MAP Communications includes "any time a receptionist spends completing any information on your call after the caller has hung up" (MAP terms, read October 7, 2026). MAP publishes no cap for that work. The per-minute vs flat-rate guide shows how rounding affects short calls.

Wrong numbers and spam

  • AnswerFirst: Billed ("The answer is YES"); numbers cannot be blocked
  • AnswerConnect: Only the first 30 calls under 30 seconds each month are free
  • Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists: Spam, misdials and callers who leave no message are not counted when caller ID passes

AnswerFirst's support article asks whether spam and solicitation calls are billed and answers "The answer is YES" (AnswerFirst support, read October 7, 2026). AnswerConnect's allowance applies to the first 30 short calls: "the additional ones will start counting toward your bill" (AnswerConnect help, read October 7, 2026). Smith.ai excludes spam, misdials and no-message callers when caller ID passes (Smith.ai reasonable use policy, read October 7, 2026). The spam call billing comparison covers the other policies.

Setup, cancellation and the number you advertise

  • Go Answer setup fee: Marketing says no setup fees; the terms say $50 or $75
  • AnswerConnect contract: 90-day minimum, then written notice; a partial month is billed in full
  • Specialty Answering Service contract: Three cancellation rules on the site and a fourth in the terms; no proration

Go Answer's pricing page says "No, we don't charge any setup fees" while its terms say it charges a setup fee depending on the plan (pricing page and terms, read October 7, 2026). AnswerConnect markets "No fixed contract" but its terms require a "minimum period of 90 calendar days" (why AnswerConnect and terms, read October 7, 2026). Specialty Answering Service says "You can cancel whenever you want" on its pricing FAQ, but its registration FAQ asks for a "30 day cancellation notice" (pricing and registration, read October 7, 2026).

If you plan to advertise the number the service assigns, inspect the porting clause before signup. PATLive's terms say numbers left on the account after cancellation "become property of PATLive" (PATLive terms, read October 7, 2026). Specialty Answering Service says a customer that ends service is "not permitted to port-away the telephone number" (Specialty terms, read October 7, 2026). Our hidden fees guide and month-to-month comparison cover the exit costs in detail.

Which human answering plan fits the job?

Messages and irregular volume: AnswerAmerica. At 100 calls it needs $150 prepaid. It costs less than the other live plans with published prices in our index at that volume. Credits roll over, but the service takes messages and does not transfer callers. Check the package purchase required at your expected volume rather than treating the cost cell as a monthly bill.

Transfers with a per-call allowance: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus. At 100 calls its plan costs $260, less than other published live plans that transfer calls after excluding the message-only rows. The ReceptionHQ pricing page details the transfer, after-hours and long-call fees that are outside the table's base math.

By-the-second billing: Go Answer. At 100 three-minute calls it costs $345, below PATLive's $479. Go Answer counts post-call work and disconnection time, so use its full pricing and terms before comparing a bill built from actual calls.

A published plan with a different minute rule: PATLive. At 100 three-minute calls it costs $479, below Moneypenny's $613. PATLive excludes time after its receptionist disconnects but applies a one-minute minimum to every call. Its pricing guide covers the tradeoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a live answering service cost per month?

At 100 three-minute calls, published live plans and prepaid packages cost $150 to $1,160 and the median is $406 (prices checked October 12, 2026). The lower end includes message-taking and prepaid credits, so check the job included before comparing the price.

Is a live answering service the same as a virtual receptionist?

The terms overlap, but the plan decides what the person does. A message-taking plan records a caller's details; a receptionist plan may transfer, schedule or take an intake. Confirm the included actions and any transfer charge in the vendor's terms.

Does a live receptionist answer every call?

That depends on the plan and the vendor's routing. A live plan can use software for routing and summaries even when a person speaks to the caller. Ask who answers first, what happens during overflow and whether a bot can speak before a person.

Are live answering calls billed by the minute or by the call?

Both exist. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus uses a per-call allowance; Go Answer and PATLive sell minute allowances, while AnswerAmerica sells prepaid call credits. Per-minute plans can also count hold, transfer or after-call work beyond the conversation.

Can a live answering service transfer callers to me?

Some can. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus offers transfers but charges for each successful and failed attempt under its terms, while its MessageExpress plan is message-taking only. Check transfers on the exact plan you buy.

How these prices were read

Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
  • Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). • Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
  • Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
  • Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
  • First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
