Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.
Nexa publishes no plan price, so its cost cells read "Quote only". AnswerConnect has published plans in the table. 25 three-minute calls are 75 minutes: PATLive charges $99/month for 50 minutes and $2.29 a minute for the other 25 minutes, so 25 calls cost $156.25.
How we picked
A pick goes to the lowest published cost, at a named volume, among the services in the table that meet one condition a small business names: calls put through, Spanish at night, no surcharge for weekends, leaving without notice. Each condition is quoted from the vendor's own pricing page, terms or help center, with the date we read it. We do not test answer quality, and there is no best-overall pick: the order changes with the condition and the volume.
Not on this list:
- ReceptionHQ MessageExpress and AnswerAmerica take messages and do not transfer calls. AnswerAmerica sells prepaid credits that roll over, not a monthly plan. Compare them in answering service pricing.
- AnswerForce is the same company as AnswerConnect ("AnywhereWorks, Inc.", answerforce.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026), priced below under AnswerConnect.
- Law-firm services are on answering services for law firms; AI-only services are in the live vs AI section.

Which answering service is best for which small business
Best for a few calls a month with live transfersReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
At 25 three-minute calls, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs $68.90, less than every other priced live or hybrid service with transfers, excluding the two message-only services. Our arithmetic uses the tier at $39/month for 15 calls (new customer offer, 3 details captured), plus excess calls at $2.99 a call. The standard tier is $80/month for 25 calls. The lead holds at 50, 100 and 200 calls: $135, $260 and $505.
- Billing: Per call
- Contract: Month-to-month; email 3 days before renewal
- Trial: 7 days, no card (the trial runs on ReceptionistPlus)
Strength: a 40-second call and a 3-minute call cost the same, and "Our free trial is based on our ReceptionistPlus service" (receptionhq.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026).
The catch: our arithmetic leaves out two charges. The terms add "$0.30 per call for ReceptionistPlus plans" for a transfer, and the same for every call "outside of 5am to 7pm Monday to Friday local time in Phoenix, Arizona", weekends included (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026). "Extended call durations will require a Plus Pack" (same terms).
Not for: long intake calls (ReceptionistPlus captures "Up to 5 details", receptionhq.com, read October 7, 2026), or US receptionists overnight: "overnight calls are handled by our equally skilled, English-speaking team in Australia" (receptionhq.com/faqs, read October 7, 2026). More in ReceptionHQ pricing.
Best for Spanish-speaking callers at nightMAP Communications
At 25 and 50 three-minute calls, MAP Communications costs $151.75 and $211.50, less than Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, the three compared services that include Spanish and publish no hours limit on it. MAP's bilingual page says "Bilingual live agents answer calls 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays" (mapcommunications.com, read October 7, 2026).
Elsewhere, ReceptionHQ's bilingual staff work "7 days a week from 5am to 7pm MST" (receptionhq.com/faqs), PATLive's Spanish is "Available from 8 am to 10 pm ET" (help.patlive.com), Posh guarantees it "Monday through Friday between 9am and 6pm Eastern" (posh.com/faqs) and Ruby's FAQ says "Monday to Friday, 5am to 6pm Pacific" (ruby.com/faqs), all read October 7, 2026. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs less at 25 calls, with Spanish in its daytime hours, and at 100 calls Go Answer costs less than MAP: $345 against $403.
- Rounding: Whole minute, rounded up
- Trial: 7 days, no card
Strength: "English & Spanish Fluency" is under "Every Plan Includes" on MAP's pricing page (read October 5, 2026).
The catch: the terms add "a flat fee charged on seven major holidays", amount not published, and a "Telecom Fee - This fee is charged at $.024 per call". The number is not yours: "You have no property rights to any telephone number" (mapcommunications.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
Not for: a business that prints the assigned number on its trucks. More in MAP Communications pricing and bilingual answering service pricing.
Best for nights and weekends with no surchargeSpecialty Answering Service
At 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls, Specialty Answering Service costs $231, $384.20 and $783. That is less than PATLive, Posh, Ruby, Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Moneypenny, Abby Connect and AnswerConnect, the compared services whose pages say nights, weekends and holidays cost nothing extra. At 25 calls PATLive costs less: $156.25 against $159.
Outside that set, ReceptionHQ surcharges night calls, MAP charges a holiday fee, and Go Answer, which costs less at 100 calls, publishes no holiday rule.
- Rounding: 1 second
- Setup fee: $0, but $60 an hour for programming changes over 5 minutes
Strength: "We do not charge any extra or hidden fees to answer your calls over a holiday, weekend, or after hours." (specialtyansweringservice.net/register, read October 7, 2026)
The catch: Spanish is a separate line, "billed according to the sub account fees" (same page), "$10/mo" on its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). And "If you terminate services, you are not permitted to port-away the telephone number" (specialtyansweringservice.net/terms, read October 7, 2026).
Not for: a business that advertises the answering line as its main number. More in Specialty Answering Service pricing and after-hours answering service pricing.
Best if you want to leave without noticePATLive
At 25, 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls, PATLive costs $156.25, $293.50, $479 and $938, less than Posh and Ruby, the two compared services whose terms run month to month with no notice period.
ReceptionHQ wants an email three days before renewal and costs less at 100 calls. Go Answer's FAQ asks for 30 days in writing; Smith.ai, Moneypenny, MAP and Abby Connect ask for about a month; AnswerConnect sets "a minimum period of 90 calendar days" (answerconnect.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026).
- Contract: Month-to-month
- Rounding: 6 seconds, with a 1-minute minimum per call
- Trial: 14 days, card required, converts automatically
Strength: "You may terminate Your Services at any time by calling customer service" (patlive.com/terms-of-use, read October 7, 2026), and nights cost the same as days: "Is there an extra charge for handling overnight, weekend, or holiday calls? Absolutely not." (patlive.com/faqs, read October 7, 2026)
The catch: port your number out first. "Any phone numbers remaining on the Account become property of PATLive and may not be available for porting or reuse once a cancellation is effective." (terms) The prepaid month may not come back: "We do not automatically refund or pro-rate the monthly service charge that is paid upfront each month." (help.patlive.com, read October 7, 2026)
Not for: a line with many spam or wrong-number calls, since every answered call bills at least a minute. More in PATLive pricing and month-to-month answering services.
Appointment booking: included, an add-on or a separate plan
What booking costs is in each vendor's own words, and the words differ:
- PATLive: "All our plans include every capability we offer" (patlive.com/how-it-works, read October 7, 2026).
- Moneypenny: "No feature tiers, no upsells - everything's included from day one." (moneypenny.com, read October 5, 2026)
- AnswerForce: "Lead capture, transfers, scheduling, and integrations are all included with AnswerForce." (answerforce.com, read October 7, 2026)
- Go Answer: scheduling "is all included in Go Answer's virtual receptionist plan" (goanswer.io, read October 7, 2026), but the work after the call is billed: summary minutes cover "emailing, setting up an appointment, or finalizing a form field." (goanswer.io/faq, read October 7, 2026)
- MAP Communications: "you only pay for the time we actively spend on the phone with callers." (mapcommunications.com, read October 7, 2026)
- Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists: "$1.50" a call, charged on every call of the plan: "Per-call pricing gives you a blended average cost of that functionality, proportional to your call plan." (docs.smith.ai, read October 7, 2026)
- Answering Service Care: "Free Appointment Setting ($50)" on its plan cards, without saying whether that is monthly (answeringservicecare.com/pricing, read October 9, 2026).
- ReceptionHQ: booking is the per-minute MyDiary plan, not ReceptionistPlus, with "Initial setup from $99 depending on complexity" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 7, 2026).
At 100 three-minute calls the plan alone costs $479 at PATLive, $613 at Moneypenny, $389 at AnswerForce and $915 at Smith.ai before its booking add-on.
The rest of the table
Ruby. From $250/month (50 minutes); at 100 three-minute calls $1,160, more than any other priced service in the table. Strength: "There is no additional charge for utilizing Ruby's 24/7 service" (Ruby help center, read October 7, 2026). Catch: "calls are rounded up to the next 60-second mark" (ruby.com/terms, read October 7, 2026), and overage runs $3.30 to $5.40 a minute, published in the help center, not on the pricing page.
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists. From $300/month (30 calls), per call, so call length does not move the bill. At 100 calls it costs $915, less than Ruby and more than PATLive. Strength: "Calls at 2 pm and 2 am cost the same." (smith.ai/pricing, read October 5, 2026) Catch: "Cancellation must be made at least thirty (30) days prior to the end of the current subscription cycle." (smith.ai terms, read October 7, 2026)
AnswerConnect. Published plans start at $350/month (200 minutes); at 100 calls it costs $395. Its sister brand AnswerForce starts at $349/month (200 minutes). Strength: "You get 24/7/365 coverage at no extra charge." (answerconnect.com, read October 7, 2026) Catch: "any partial minutes will be rounded up to the nearest whole minute" (answerconnect.com/termsofservice, read October 7, 2026). See who owns which answering service.
Go Answer. From $175/month (100 minutes); at 100 calls $345, less than MAP and Specialty Answering Service. Strength: billed "in one second increments" (goanswer.io/terms-conditions, read October 7, 2026). Catch: the pricing page says "No, we don't charge any setup fees"; the terms say "Go Answer charges a $50 or a $75 set-up fee depending on the plan chosen" (same terms). More in Go Answer pricing.
Moneypenny. From $165/month (50 minutes). Strength: bilingual answering "at no extra cost" (moneypenny.com, read October 7, 2026). Catch: "if Services are canceled after the 1st calendar day of the month, the Customer will be responsible for payment of another full month" (Moneypenny terms, read October 7, 2026). More in Moneypenny pricing.
Posh. From $65/month (pay per use at $2.30/min). Strength: "no surcharges for after-hours, weekend, or holiday calls" (posh.com blog, read October 7, 2026). Catch: the terms say "call times are rounded up to the next 60-second increment" (posh.com/terms, read October 7, 2026), while the blog says "a 90-second call counts as 1.5 minutes". The terms are the contract.
Abby Connect. From $165/month (50 minutes), human and AI on one plan. Strength: "Abby charges no after-hours or weekend upcharge" (abby.com, read October 7, 2026). Catch: the billed total "includes ring time, talk time, and transfer time", and humans work "5am-9pm PST weekdays, and 6am-6pm PST on weekends" (Abby terms, read October 7, 2026).
Nexa. Quote only: the pricing page names "100 Voice Minutes", "300 Voice Minutes" and "500 Voice Minutes" plans with no price (nexa.com/pricing, read October 5, 2026). Strength: appointment scheduling is listed on all three. Catch: a "Holiday-related fee for the following holidays", eight of them (nexa.com terms, read October 7, 2026).

How these prices were read
Every price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page, on the date in its Source cell, and saved as a dated capture. Monthly plans use the cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls. AnswerAmerica shows the least upfront prepaid credit purchase covering that call volume; unused credits roll over. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Clarified Alert Communications and Nexa trial summaries from "None" to "None found": the reviewed public pages do not offer trial terms, but do not establish that no private offer exists.
- Added AnswerForce published 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 3,500, 5,000 and 10,000-minute plans from the pricing page JavaScript captured October 7, 2026. Each lists $1.85 per additional minute or chat. A prior pass missed these plans because its text capture stopped at 1,000 minutes.
- AnswerConnect and LEX Reception priced from their own /plans-direct pages, including setup fees and larger plans. PATLive added its 2,000 to 5,000-minute tiers. AnswerAmerica added with exact prepaid credit packages; comparison costs show the least upfront package purchase covering the call volume, with unused credits rolling over. Its terms charge wrong numbers and hangups, contrary to its price page. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress named in full. Specialty Answering Service cancellation summary and setup-fee summaries corrected. AI product terms added for Go Answer, Moneypenny and Smith.ai. The initial AnswerForce text capture appeared to stop at 1,000 minutes; the larger plans were later found in saved page JavaScript.
- Published plans that were on pages already read but missing here. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus added as its own live row (messages and call transfers, no scope note; read October 5, 2026): from $35 a month plus $2.99 a call to $2,440 for 1,000 calls, from its ReceptionistPlus page and the price table in ReceptionHQ's terms (read October 7, 2026), with its own billing terms ($0.30 a call after hours, $0.30 per transfer). ReceptionHQ (MessageExpress, still message-taking only): 150, 250, 350 and 450 calls ($250, $395, $540 and $675) from the same terms table. Specialty Answering Service: 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($2,929, $5,649 and $10,599, overage $1.19 to $1.09 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026), and hold time added to what its per-minute billing covers, from its rates page (read October 7, 2026). Go Answer: 1,700, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 minutes ($1,870, $2,750, $5,500 and $11,000, overage $1.40 and $1.25 a minute) from its pricing page (read October 5, 2026). Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) from its help center (read October 7, 2026).
- Plans and rates that were on the captured pages but missing here: My AI Front Desk overage $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01), Go Answer 750 minutes ($825), AnswerForce 800 minutes ($1,069), ReceptionHQ MessageExpress 400 and 500 calls ($610 and $725), and ReceptionHQ's $0.20 after-hours surcharge per MessageExpress call.
- Billing terms added for 18 providers from their terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial. Alert Communications added (law firms only, kept out of the ranges). AnswerForce prices added from its /plans-direct page (Intro $349 for 200 minutes, Best value $389 for 300). VoiceNation now redirects to Moneypenny.
- Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate. Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
- Sameday AI added (home services only, read October 5, 2026): Launch from $449/month with 500 minutes, Scale from $789/month with 1,000 minutes. Like Slang.ai, it is listed but kept out of the category ranges because it serves one vertical.
- First edition: 30 providers read from their own pricing pages. AnswerConnect, AnswerForce, LEX Reception, Answering Legal and Nexa ask for a form or a sales call before showing a price, so they are listed as quote only. VoiceNation publishes the same plan table as Moneypenny (US), so that table is listed once, under Moneypenny.
